teaching abstinence vs. sex ed - a poll

Here you go:

“Teen pregnancy rates have reached historic lows dropping 25 percent from 1990 to 1999. The birth rate dropped 19 percent and the abortion rate was down 39 percent in this age group. More recent data indicate the teen birth rate has continued to drop through 2002 -– down 28 percent.”

That’s from the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the CDC. Please note the language “historic low.”

People still get raped. The law against it just means we get to hunt down and lock up rapists afterwards. The previous poster was mentioning rape in the sense of “no means no” education, rather than a “you’re forbidden to rape anyone” prohibition. And the fact that rape occurs despite the laws against it only strengthens the argument that a prohibition against sex (ie, abstinence-only sex ed) won’t work.

Oh, we are in favor of sex ed. And we’re against folks who think that “laughing hysterically” can substitute for actual facts.

As far as Jocelyn Elders, Cher3, that whole fiasco was appalling. But it did give us the catchy euphemism “Discharging the Surgeon General.”
