My uncle owns his own business, and has developed a computer program for creating estimates, tracking inventory, and so on. The program is tailored to be specific to his particular trade, and he thinks it would be valuable to others in his trade. He was thinking about having somebody touch it up a little, to make it look more professional, and to find somebody who would produce the program on discs, so he could copyright it and sell it. Neither he nor I has any idea who would do this sort of work, and I don’t precisely know what to Google-search for, and anyhow I can’t figure out what all the mindless babble tech companies put on their websites means.
Are there people or companies who do this sort of touch-up programming work and manufacture the ultimate product for individuals like my uncle to sell? Is there a direction I could point him in if he wants to go ahead with this plan?
Well, you might try something like http://itmoonlighter.com/ .
Something to consider though — if you’re not familiar with this type of thing you might want to search intensively for similiar shareware, freeware, or commercial programs ( be a shame to dump money into something that already exists ). Also, there might be other considerations such as :
- Are you or your uncle going to offer any support?
- Has it been tested on different platforms?
- Is there a database or other configuration considerations that might effect the deployment and/or operation of the program?
I don’t want to pee on your parade, just some thoughts that come immediately to mind.
My suggestion would be to have someone just flip through the source code and write up a proposal. If you don’t know any programmers just go by your local Hooters on Friday afternoon, there should be a few there — buy them a pitcher of beer.
Seems to be a few on this board also.
And good luck to you, I hope it works out.
