We can all extol the virtues of modern technology and the wonders it has wrought. However, sometimes it blows up in our faces and has us wishing for the “good old days”. Contributions would be entertaining and appreciated.

We have magnetic locks that hold open all the fire doors in all the hallways throughout our entire district. If the fire alarm goes off, the locks are released, and all the fire doors close simultaneously throughout the district. Unfortunately, this past Saturday, our district had a power failure in the middle of the night and, without power, the magnetic locks failed and all the doors slammed. The switchboard at our security company lit up like a Christmas tree. It looked like a mass intrusion and robbery was in progress. Admins were called in the middle of the night, squad cars arrived, etc, etc, etc. Oops!

In our continuous efforts to satisfy the State of Illinois, which is never satisfied anyway, we have sensors on all the lights everywhere in the building. It’s like Star Trek. You enter a hallway or a room, and the lights magically turn on. You leave and, after 5 minutes, they magically go off. Sounds like it’s convenient and a great energy saver. Unfortunately, there is something very wrong with the sensor system in our tech office. When my boss isn’t here, the lights are constantly going off. I have to wave my arms wildly, sometimes for several seconds, before they go back on. This cycle is repeated over and over throughout the day. Even when he is here, they still go off occasionally but, fortunately, not nearly as often.
