This may be too anecdotal for the GQ page, but what the hey. I haven’t had any  directed at me for a while…
I work/ am a student at the University of Wisconsin, and it is campus policy that smoking is not allowed within 25’ of school doors…I don’t know, however, if schools/ businesses/ organizations can set their own standards on smoking, or if there are regulations on the state level… Of course, no one really pays any attention to the restriction; especially in cold weather, smokers tend to huddle by the doors.
I will say, that though a 1000’ area seems extreme, I would be thrilled if smokers respected the 25’ rule. I have asthma, and few things irritate it more than the cigarette smoke; and the cold air in the winter only makes it worse.
Though Pollyanna-ish, I think that common courtesy would be the best compromise. I don’t yell at/ hassle/ give dirty looks to smokers; it’s their choice. In return, I’d appreciate not having to whip out my puffer every time I go to teach.
As a side note, I did see one person cited for underage smoking. It was on a community college campus during the summer.
