Teenage Drivers

Thank you, I try

The dumber people think you are, the more surprised they’re going to be when you kill them.

That’s how it used to be here, but parking was required. It was sometimes possible to get away without it, though. A friend was on her driving test several years ago, and the instructor told her to parallel park up ahead. Someone got to the spot before she did, and the instructor just said “Eh, forget it.”

Graduated licensing has only been in effect here for a couple years.

I thought they taught that stuff in school. Sure, you can go and take a test at the DOT, but when I was a teen they offered Drivers Education as a class for a semester. We studied road signs, traffic laws, simulated driving and of course actual driving. I went and got my permit when I was 14 so after some good practice I aced the class. All I had to do was to take my little piece of paper that said I passed and go get my license at the DOT, no further testing required, except of course I had to be at least 16.

On another note, I also got my motorcycle license at 19 (when I bought a bike) and while there is a 2 day class you can take I opted to just test away at the DOT. Suprisingly easy… just a quick written test and I had to perform a simple driving exercise for them that lasted about a minute. I had no idea that there was a such thing as learners permits for a motorcycle, but there is as long as the permit driver is within 50 feet of another licensed motorcycle driver, meaning someone you are riding with. Apparently I did it the quick way.

“Wow! Spider-Man! Are you really friends with the X-men?”
"Not since Cyclops tried to use my viewmaster."

We took a driver’s ed class at my school but it was all book learning. We took all the written tests out of a driver’s ed textbook. My school did not have enough money to get cars (or the requisite insurance) for us to practice actual driving. But the guys did learn how to change a tire! (Our teacher was also the basketball/golf/baseball coach/PE teacher and he was a sexist asshole!)

As far as I know, they don’t teach driving in high school in Canada. At least they haven’t for at least 15 years in BC.

I took mechanics in grade 11, even though I didn’t (and still don’t) drive. Great course, but not very practical. They taught how to change a tire on a hoist with pneumatic tools…which doesn’t help much when you’re stranded on the side of the highway.

So, my dad took it upon himself to teach his little girl how to change a tired.

I ended up with a sprained foot, a bleeding hand, and several bruises. I couldn’t do stuff in mechanics class for a week because I couldn’t fit a shoe over my foot (shoes are required in shop classes).

I’ve decided to never change another tire again, ever. I’ll just freeze to death on the side of the road.

I’ll stick to changing the oil in dad’s truck every 3 months.
