Teenage dumbasses who volunteer to get hazed

Also-if someone has a cut-a bleeding head wound-and human feces are rubbed against the area-isn’t that just asking for a nasty ass infection?

Good, god, blood and shit? That spreads disease!

Sheesh.

The people who did that should be put in jail for a month or so. I think it’s appropriate. Assault and battery are crimes and the girls who did this deserve to be punished.

I find it hard to believe that these girls had no idea of what was to come, seeing how this was some sort of sadistic tradition. And even if they were blindsided by unexpected paint cans and shitterlings (to use monstro’s term), I think it is sad that they just kneeled there and let violence be dispensed upon them without nary a struggle. That’s sad. I saw footage of someone roughly smearing a heaping handful of mud/shit/miscellanious detritus in the face of some girl and she just let them. Maybe these girls were afraid of fighting back or running away, but it’s hard to feel sorry for someone who put themselves in this situation.

Brutus? Character? Don’t make me laugh.

Actually, it’s more along the lines of persons without character not understanding how hazing promotes humiliation, violence and bullying.

Don’t they go to the school that is featured in The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, among other films?

[/hijack]

I saw an interview with another girl from that school on tonight, who said that the senior girls told the juniors that it wasn’t a big deal, and that apparently this was part of the tradition, to not tell what was done. I also saw in some of the footage, some of the girls pleading/screaming for help. In another case, one junior girl got up and charged one of the senior girls, and was immediately double-teamed and had a bucket pushed over her. From what I could tell in the video, the juniors looked outnumbered and disoriented. Maybe some of them could have fought back more actively, but from their perspective they were surrounded by people, some of whom had bats, and maybe they were too scared to do much more than what they did. I would be willing to bet that most of them hadn’t been beat up before. And as the victim of an assault in the past, I will add that sometimes you just do what you think you have to (including just riding it out) in order to get through it, and to criticize them too harshly for not fighting back isn’t really cool.

Some senior girls brought baseball bats, buckets, paint thinner, paint, animal parts, and all sorts of vile things along. They planned to assault these juniors. I can see assuming that you have a friendly football game and maybe have to polish and kiss the girls’ boots, maybe get paddled, and other mildly embarrassing stuff, but this was an assault.

Guin: The news is reporting that one girl did contract a bacterial infection from the feces. Another has a broken ankle, another has partial hearing loss (hopefully short-term, haven’t heard much more about this), and at least one has stitches in her scalp.

I’m in a well-respected marching band down here in Texas, and we don’t feel the need to haze each other to create unity or a bonding. Just the fact that we’re out every day in upwards of 100 degree heat is bonding enough.

Any other unity problems are usually taken care of by our directors, who have their own sort of hazing, which consists of getting in your face with a megaphone.

Hazing to create bonding and unity is like slicing off my hand to stop me from biting my nails. There are better ways to do it.

You know, if hazing builds characters like Brutus, I think I can do without it!

Just another link to add…

It says the police are trying to determine if some of the parents supplied the alcohol and “supplies”. Also, that some of the injuries include one girl having her earring pulled out and another with a broken tailbone.

Absolutely sickening. I hope that not only do these girls get some much needed discipline, but that it sends a message to others in this community (and beyond) about how harmful a practice this is. Violence and humiliation are only things that one should experience in life out of dire circumstances beyond one’s control, not to gain popularity or acceptance among some group.

Too sad.

Of course, then I go off and forget the link. Hmmph. So much for preview being my friend.

Here it is.

“They were told no physical pain would be inflicted, no hair cutting, they wouldn’t be made to eat anything,” he said. “They expected to get whipped cream, ketchup, syrup in their hair, that kind of stuff.”
I think it’s a pretty dumb thing to do, to agree to let people dump gunk on you, and pay for the privilege, but what they were agreeing to was a whole lot different from what they got. I don’t think it’s fair to blame the girls who got hurt when they had no way of knowing what was being planned.

When I was in High school, I remember some of my buddies in Catholic High schools having “fish fry’s.” Generally freshmen hazing. I believe that has ended. I also had some buddies in FFA. They did similar things to those who decided to show up.

What I find surprizing is that in universities in the U.S. through the early 50’s all freshmen would be subjected to university sactioned humiliations. Not just those who pledged fraternities. I can just imagine a 21-24 year old freshman responding to a senior, “You expect me to wear a stupid beanie and do what?” This was ended when WWII vets started taking advantage of the G.I. Bill. My father was one of those guys.

Some of the fraternity hazing incidents I hear about seem to go way beyond male bonding, and well into homo-eroticisism. Elephant walks. Soggy buscuits. Circle jerks. Or into serious fecalphelia (I heard that word on South Park).

Some years ago, a fraternity got in trouble for sending their pledges running through campus in burlap diapers. THAT I would find funny. I would even enjoy participating.

Brutus. Your fraternity newsletter has released its latest edition. Is that you on the front page?

And why would I join your club? What does it offer besides humilation and pain? Why would I feel any closer to someone who had physically and emotionally abused me? Just because they went through it to? Sorry, I’m not going to feel all gushy about someone who hurt me and enjoyed it. I’m going to remember their actions and repay it in some manner at some point.

It would be different if the struggle I was going through was a necessity for the type of work or task I was trying to qualify for. The ability to withstand cold, run long distances carrying heavy weights, go long periods without food, all while being yelled to induce stress would be acceptable to me if I was training for the infantry. But how joining a group of drunken frat boys would require anything more difficult than the ability to make lewd comments I fail to comprehend.

Why should I join your club unless I get something in return. Karate gave me plenty of bruises, but I learned a lot in return. What would I get out of joining the Brutus’ club? The right to brag about how I was tough enough to take it? More likely the right to be ridiculed for being stupid enough to sit there and take it.

How exactly did getting hit in the head with a baseball club help the girl mentioned in the story? Is there a theory that brain damage helps people play better?

Funny how Brutus seems to have run away and hid.

I wonder why? :wally

This isn’t a fucking chatroom, you goddamned 13-year old. I am not sitting around, eagerly awaiting the next installment of stupid crap from morons like you and Blackclaw. (A ‘baseball club’? What the fuck is that?)

There. You successfully trolled out a response. Happy? Is your AOL IM urge sated?

Ah, Brutus, that fine character of yours is shining through as always.

Ah. How getting the shit beaten out of you and having that same shit rubbed in your face builds character.

Brutus is indeed an idiot, but he has a point here. Message boards are not chatrooms and it’s annoying as fuck when you leave for a day and are treated like you’ve run away for good. The idea of constantly checking back on a page and having what basically becomes a conversation on a message board seems remarkably silly to me.

[/hijack]

Yeah… hazing is dumb.

Awwww, who’s being a big baby now that he’s had his ass handed to him in this debate?

A few facts:

  1. I’m not 13. I’m a hell of a lot older. I may not act my age all the time, but I don’t act like a 13 year old.

  2. I have never IM’d. I have never used AOL. I will never IM. I will never use AOL.

  3. You need to have the baseball bat surgically removed from your ass, 'cause it’s given you quite the AssHat attitude.

Not that you didn’t have an AssHat 'tude to begin with. You’ve just added to it. Which isn’t a good thing.

Hazing can be effective at weeding out pledges who lack character:

My god this is appalling.
