I have an opportunity to visit (and perhaps work) in Berkshire, England. I live in the US, but I have been to London and several other European cities. What’s it like living in the Berkshire, England area?
I went to school in Berkshire for some years, and lived across the boundary in Surrey for a long time. My mother still lives there.
It’s a long thin county, so west Berks (rolling downs - Watership Down was based there) is quite different from east Berks (prime London commuter belt). In the middle is the county town Reading, where I did my doctoral studies (largely absentee, I should add). It’s a fairly bland sort of place, but the countryside around is very nice, especially the towns and villages on the Thames and her tributaries. Further east (i.e. towards London) you’ve got Bracknell New Town, which has as much about it as its name suggests and Ascot, the home of the royal race course, and Windsor, as in the castle. Obviously, house prices, and the cost of living generally, are high.
By the way, it’s pronounced Barkshire.
As roger thornhill says, Reading and its environs aren’t anything to write home about. It’s very much commuter territory - which, of course, is because it’s easy to get to London, which can be handy!
You’d also not be far from the south coast, and within easy driving distance of the West Country for some of the best countryside England can offer. And if you decide you don’t like it, Heathrow’s nearby
If you are used to driving arround America, then you aren’t far from anywhere else in UK Much of Berks is nice, though Slough and Reading are quite grimey commuter towns. Windsor and Eton are great to visit, and Bray has two of the best restaurants in the world (in a town no bigger than an American shopping mall). The river Thamse flows through much of Berkshire and the pubs near the river are often nice.
What Roger said.
Thanks for the info, I’ll be sure to post if I make it there.
