tell me about Birmingham, ALA

So I am currently considering moving to Birmingham, Alabama for a job. Has anyone ever lived there? Is it a nice city?

I just checked and it seems that its the 5th most dangerous city in the U.S… yikes

You have to stop with the “AL” or keep going all the way to “Alabama”. There is no in-between  My stepbrother lives there and loves it. The University Of Alabama at Birmingham is well regarded as has a lot to offer. It won’t be as cosmopolitan as say, Boston, but if you appreciate mid-sized southern cities then it could be nice. The cost of living is low compared to comparable cities in other areas of the country. Birmingham has all socioeconomic groups, religions etc. so you just have to fit in how is best for you. My stepbrother has specialized in dating the alternative and Wiccan set for the past few years. Until recently, he was a sushi chef. You wouldn’t expect a sushi chef with a Wiccan girlfriend to live in Alabama but they have some of everything everywhere these days.

Seriously, it depends on where you are coming from. It won’t be too cold and it is pretty affordable. Alabama (at least the cities) aren’t like they are in the movies.

Don’t worry, although it isn’t explicitly stated in this article, it sounds like it is #6, so it’s a whole lot safer than you expected

I have lived in or near two of those cities, and have never really worried about my safety in the daytime; I just wouldn’t go walking at night.

You have to carefully look at what “most dangerous” means in terms of crime statistics. It certainly isn’t good but most cities with a dangerous reputation are pretty safe for those not in engaged in the gang and drug trades. Detroit is listed as the deadliest city in the U.S. right now and it has some great suburbs. Washington D.C. is also a perennial favorite for the violence rankings and that doesn’t stop millions of school kids from going there every year. I lived in New Orleans when it was #1 for murder and nothing ever happened. Miami has always been a heavyweight contender for these titles as well and it is also a tourism favorite.

American cities tend to be so large by land area that you can pick your own safety level and I don’t think that Birmingham is dangerous at all for a person that doesn’t live in the middle of the hood and has an ounce of common sense.

Both my kids lived there after they got out of college. Nice town. UAB is a large and successful public university and attracts a young crowd.
Very hilly. At least to me. As with most cities the central part of town is kind of ‘urban’ (relatively lot of crime), but the inner suburbs/city fringes are quiet nice.
