My understanding is that there are some fairly good exclusive games for the PS3. I’m considering purchasing one; I could use a blu-ray player, and “Dark Souls” looks like fun. If anyone is interested, it would be helpful for me to know:
1.) Which model of PS3 should I purchase? Are there any I should absolutely avoid?
2.) Are there any PS3-exclusive games, other than “Dark Souls,” that might make a PS3 worth buying? I already own a capable gaming PC.
3.) Is there a PS4 on the horizon? If so, should I wait for that?
There is the 160 and the 320 gigabyte hard drive models with a $50 price difference between the two. The uncharted bundle at Bestbuy seems like a good buy since it’s the same price as a 320 GB model and includes the game.
Uncharted and killzone are always mentioned, as are Little big planet, God of War III, Grand Turismo and Metal Gear Solid 4. Sine you have a capable PC, definitely stick to the exclusives.
The PS4 is rumored to be shown off at the next E3 this summer. That might or might not happen we don’t know. But most people assume that the next gen consoles will come out late 2013 at the earliest.
So take that into account. It may be that the next gen will be able to play these titles (backwards compatibility) then again, it might not. The system is cheap enough that it might still be worth your while though. And if you do decide to wait, well it’s not like the PC won’t have plenty of games to keep you busy.

Doesn’t really matter assuming you’re buying a new one, hard drive size and bundled games/accessories would be the differences, the base unit is the same (and you can upgrade the hard drive yourself, the manual even tells you how).
If you’re considering used, keep in mind all PS3’s run PS1 games, but only older PS3’s run PS2 games. If you want to run PS2 games, you have to get certain older models, and they’re going to cost more, and they’re more likely to crap out with a “yellow light of death” error, so unless you really want PS2 compatibility stick to the “slim” models

I really like the inFamous series, the Uncharted series has a really big following, if you like the older 2D Zelda’s then 3D Dot Game Heroes would probably be a must own. If you like graphic adventures, Heavy Rain.

Eventually, but it’s not been announced yet, it will be highly expensive compared to buying a PS3 now, and judging by the way Sony’s launched their last few systems, it will be a huge mess for a while so I’d go with the PS3 rather than waiting. If you were going to wait for anything, all that’s for sure on the horizon now is Wii U, Nintendo’s next system, supposedly more powerful than 360 and PS3.
I think that the next gen systems are coming fairly soon. Like you say, the next gen Nintendo will probably be better than the PS3 or 360, but it won’t be in the same league as the the PS4 and the new Xbox. BTW, what will the new Xbox be called? The 720?
While nobody knows the exact specs, Nintendo has already announced its next gen console will support full HD video and has hinted it will have more processing power than the PS3 and 360. And it’s very likely they’ll unveil the new system this year, given the early looks at E3 last year and press releases and such.
Considering the other consoles are now a few years old and already supported HD video back then, there’s nothing too shocking about any of the speculation thus far. I’d be shocked if the new Nintendo console wasn’t more powerful than the PS3 or XBox.
Sony has already come out and said not to expect a PS4 until at least 2014, so there’s not a new one coming out soon. While we don’t know the specs for any proposed box, Sony isn’t going to lose a hardware spec contest in 2014 to a console released in 2012.
Exactly what I was going to say…that being said, both are very fun, albeit very challenging games…but in a good way. Most of the time when you die, you know why, and it’s usually because you messed up, not because the death was cheap, or you didn’t have a super-awesome weapon, or were too low a level…there are people who beat the game using crappy, un-modified weapons and stay at level one…
But Dark Souls is better on the PS3 for three reasons:
The main attack button is easier to use on the PS3 controller than the 360. On the PS3 controller, there are two sets of “triggers,” L1/L2 and R1/R2…main blocking and attacking is L1 and R1, on the 360, these are mapped to their equivalent LB and RB, but those are considered “minor” buttons on the 360, and I’ve heard that it’s awkward to constantly have to hit those.
Larger player base. Since most of the buyers of Dark Souls were the people who played Demon’s Souls, they tended to buy it for the PS3, so it’s usually less of a wait to use the multiplayer.
Some 360 users have used “character editors” to hack their PvP characters to have functionally infinite health and stamina, and have weapons do more damage. Yes, if caught they get banned from X-Box Live, but it’s hard to catch them, I guess. AFAIK, there isn’t anything like that on the PS3.
That being said, I love my PS3…there are some great exclusives, already mentioned, and it works great as a Blu-Ray player (though I recommend buying the Blu-Ray remote…it’s not needed, but it’s easier to control video playback with it than the controller, since I always forget what button does what.)
Oh, and 3D Dot Game Heroes is the best game! It’s like a perfect mix of old-school Zelda and Dragon Warrior, in terms of gameplay and difficulty, with a lot of great meta-humor and good graphics (you might not think that a 3D pixellated world could qualify as “good,” but it does! Although, like a lot of current-gen games, there’s too much bloom! But that is my only complaint.)
L1 and R1 are no harder to hit on the 360 controller than the PS3 one. This is a non-issue. And I’ve never heard this “minor buttons” thing before either. o.o
I’m going to come down on the other side here - I would be ASTONISHED to discover that this isn’t also on the PS3.
I bought my PS3 (original PS2 compatible) in 2007 thinking I’d use it for gaming. Here it is, 2011, and I almost never play games. It’s become our entertainment center - DVDs, Netflix, YouTube, watching photos from the camera, and playing music.
I paid a ridiculous amount for it, but it was worth it, I think…
I don’t know, that’s just what I heard on another forum I frequent. A LOT of 360 players were complaining that the main attacks were LB/RB instead of the larger triggers on the bottom…which, again, function like the L2/R2 on the PS3 version and are the “strong” attacks. So I guess I don’t know why they were complaining, because it makes less sense to have the larger, bottom, button for light attack and the smaller, upper, one for strong, especially if that is then the opposite of how the other system does it.
From what I’ve seen, there isn’t any hacking on the PS3. It’s harder to mod the PS3 in the first place, and even harder still to keep a modded PS3 on the PlayStation Network. And from personal experience I’ve never encountered anyone I thought was hacking, and several people on that same forum I talked about earlier have mentioned they have (things like their very high level characters using fully upgraded super-weapons dealing 1 damage, the min. the game allows to go through, on a guy not wearing any armor and not blocking…clearly hacking.)
I just did a google search, and very easily in the first few links found viable save game/character editors for 360, tried the same for PS3 and got…the same editors for 360. Make of that what you will.
