I’ve always liked the song “You’re in My Heart” by Rod Stewart but it was only today, and thanks to these boards, that I realized he was saying
You’re Celtic, United
but baby I’ve decided
You’re the best team I’ve ever seen
I don’t know what I thought he meant before but now I get it! Soccer, I mean football, right?
It looks like the song came out in 1979 so what was this all about? Who are Celtic and United and what made them so great? Are they still great? Who are today’s “Celtic and United”?
Cetlic is the top team in the Scottish League, (Manchester) United is the top team (this year at least) in the English league. Both were tops then, still are now. They are Rod’s two favorite teams. Others should be able to add more.
Gigi, that’s a little spooky. I was humming this to myself last night while I was walking the dogs. When I hummed across that lyric, a light bulb went off and I realized he was talking about soccer. Thanks for the confirmation, Wee Bairn.
All the years, I just assumed “Celtic” just referred to ethnicity.
Only a nitpick, but no way were Man Ure then top team in English football. The album was released in 1977: Liverpool won the league in '76 & '77, picking up the Uefa Cup and the European Cup at the same time.
(OK, United did win the FA Cup in 1977…but who took it off them? )
Celtic are Glasgow’s Catholic team, Rangers are the Protestant. Think “Northern Ireland” when trying to get some idea of the supporter’s views on each other.
