Tell me about East Los Angeles

My sister and I are visiting a cousin in East LA this July. We’re both flying from the eastern time zone, and will stay for three or four nights.

I assume our cousin will have an agenda planned, so I don’t really need ideas on what to DO - more on what to EXPECT. Neighborhood? Weather?

But if you’ve got 'em, suggestions on what we absolutely MUST do (or not do) are always welcome!

Head towards West Los Angeles.

Enjoy the weather.

This is not a smart-ass answer.

First thing I thought of.

yeah, its the latino version of south-central aka “barrio” and most everyone there wants to move elsewhere but can’t afford it … you’ll probably be doing everything somewhere else … be careful and don’t leave anything valuable in your car …
Great Mexican food tho

It most certainly is not. Go west, and go fast.

Wow, you guys aren’t kidding. I googled “East Los Angeles” and the 3 top stories are:
Man Found Fatally Shot in East Los Angeles; Gunman sought
Man Killed in East Los Angeles Stabbing Identified
Man shot to death on Whittier Boulevard in East LA

It’s 98% Latino which, with the news stories and comments here, suggests it’s a ghetto.

My best friend is a latino in east la. He would always ALWAYS rather take an hour bus/train ride to visit me in the valley or hwood rather than have me drive out to his side of town to hang out.

If you like Mexican food check out La Golondrina in Olvera Street. We’ll be passing through L.A. ourselves, next month, and it’s my big regret that we won’t have time to go there ourselves.

I’d say that just about all of the things that Ronald Raygun mentions are good choices, though places like Jumbo’s have just become over-run, and with only two days I wouldn’t bother wasting your time at the Scientology building. The real question is what your cousin has planned. I wouldn’t be surprised if he/she thinks you want to just do things like go to Universal Studios or something like that, totally outside of East Hollywood.

Yeah, don’t bother going into the Scientology Building. If you want to live dangerously, you can cut across the lawn on your way walking to something else. Oooh ahhh! So blue.

I still recommend La Golindrina, though now that the thread title has been changed, you’d be going in the opposite direction to what I thought. Even better, because from Hollywood all you have to do is hop on the Red Line which will take you right to it (Union Station stop).

I’ve put all of this in my iPhone Notes, and we head to CA on Thursday. Any last-minute suggestions welcome, and I’ll report back when I return!

Thanks again for the excellent feedback.
