Tell me about living in Seattle

The good news is housing in either Federal Way or Lacey will be substantially cheaper than housing in Seattle.

I don’t know much about Lacey. The Eff-Dub is kinda dodgy in parts but there are also some cheaper places to live closer to it. I haven’t spent much time in either though so I can’t tell you about interesting spots there. You do want to note that if you’ll be working there, commuting from Bellevue or Kirkland or downtown Seattle will be a chore.

I’ve been here 10 years now and I’d have to disagree with Amarinth, yes the city is laid out in grids but when you have intersections on the Eastside like 140th Ave NE and NE 140th Ave it’s not nececcarily easy to navigate. Seattle itself isn’t much better, sure the Avenues start at 1 and work their way up, but the named streets follow no discernable order to the outsider.

Plus streets like Republican or Prospect which share the same name on the ends of their runs, but the whole middle bit is an inconveniently large body of water.

And Green Lake, don’t get me started on Green Lake. It is a zone of infinite singularity improbability from which no driver escapes. Even when safely on the other side of I-5, you can here it chuckling at you…waiting…waiting…

Updates:
It looks like my current choices are actually Lacey, WA (outside Olympia) or Federal Way, WA, not Seattle proper.
I’m totally cool with living near where I work, provided the neighborhood isn’t outright shady. I’ve been doing the shady neighborhood thing for a while here in California and I’m tired of it. So, while our ideal neighborhood would be little houses next to little artsy shops next to little grocery stores, we won’t cry if we end up with something closer to urban sprawl.

Opinions?

Side question: The potential employer wants us to come up and visit, but we’re going to be squeezing every penny and likely borrowing from family just to drive us, the pets, and enough clothes to start the job. How weird is it to say “Thanks, but I’d just like to sign a contract now”? Will I totally creep them out?

Federal Way is still King County. Lacey will be less expensive than Federal Way WRT housing.

Lacey is pretty much “suburban sprawl” though.
