NYC will never let go of 9/11. Columbine has two massacres that will always be a part of them. Bath MI will never get over the mass murder that took place there. When tragedy reaches a certain size, it becomes part of the community psyche.
To get a sense of geography and what the city looks like, you should look at the pictures taken and tweeted out by Dave DiCello
If you’re a runner, Pittsburgh hosts a great marathon/half marathon the beginning of May.
Around 30,000 runners, lots of different and interesting neighborhoods, varied scenery and great crowd support.
Cleveland does NOT participate in that parking chair nonsense.
I’ve always wanted to Pittsburgh to see the Andy Warhol Museum.
Which is an interesting thing on the North Side/Manchester for us who live there - a lot of great attractions and things to do but some interesting traffic days and road closures as well. Great Race day I can head to Beaver or any place north but if I wanted to get to say Pleasant Hills, forget it. Plus Steelers traffic and all. I keep multiple sports scheduled on the 'fridge just so I know when NOT to leave the house.
Scumpup et al: I had a great jacket given to me long ago - long reason we’ll skip here - that always got me odd looks in other cities. Nice nylon with a German Shepherd dog head embroidered on the back and bold yellow lettering - BEAVER SEARCH AND RESCUE. Some lower life form in NYC copped it from a coat rack on me. Still miss the damn thing.
(maybe if the dog’s tongue hadn’t been hanging out ----------)
That’s cuz they’re all a bunch of jagoffs.
I’ve decided to postpone the move for 2 years. One year and 9 months, specifically.
There were a couple of factors in this decision. His half-sister that lives there that was going to be a main support for us when we moved there, turned out to have an anger management and communication problem. When I tried to talk to her about her repeated flakiness with my son such as promising to call or call him back and then him not hearing from her for weeks, she immediately shut me down and indicated that I had done something to her by bringing it up that required her never to speak to me or my son ever again. Bizarre. Filed under “when someone tells you they have an anger management problem when you’re getting to know them, understand that you will be on the receiving end some day”.
At first, I was like, “we’re still moving to Pittsburgh. Fuck her, she doesn’t own the city”. But the day started getting closer and I was getting fairly anxious about it. Strange city, no support… eek.
Then, my son is doing well at home and at school now. He isn’t being bullied, and has friends. We haven’t said that in… ever. It’s a good time for him right now here. And he asked me to stay here and let him go to this school until he graduates. He’s a junior now. I made a deal with him that if he continued his good behavior at home and continues to do well in school, that I would keep living here until June 2017. I don’t really like it here and I was looking forward to moving to a big city and possibly to a more socially progressive state. But no, no move for you, come back two years!
So we are still out of here, albeit on a longer timeline now. I included the caveat in my decision that once he graduates, we are moving anywhere in the country that I want to. He will be over 18, yes, but will need to live with me a bit longer than that in preparation for his eventual independent living situation. And that’s kind of exciting, because- anywhere… hmmm.
Anyway, thanks for reading and to those who PM’d me with offers of Pittsburghian support, friendships, and beer.
I still like Pittsburgh as a destination, a lot.
If there is any remaining interest in a Pburgh Dopefest, Penn Brewery has their Oktoberfest coming up.
I’d show. Ate and drank there about 10-15 years ago. Good beer, good German food. The went under at some point but came back.
Start a thread in MPSIMS.
Oh, no, I was going to offer to get the thread title changed to Pittsburgh Dopefest…
Better a new thread.
Okay, if you insist.
