Tell me about Royal Crowns

Anyone else initially read this as “the queen is rarely beheaded”?

Yes, I did. But then, I’m French, so both concept are logically associated in my mind.

her hats and scarf are crown standins, and much more practical for day to day living. her mum was very, very, rarely seen without a hat, as there are less “home movie” kind of things with her.

That is, I think, more of a generational thing than it is a royalty thing. Especially in the Queen Mother’s generation, respectable women just didn’t go around in public without hats.

yes, the Queen comes from a generation that always wore a hat to go out in public.
I can’t see Prince Charles wearing one so much when his turn comes.
The Crowns are altered by the Crown Jewellers for each new Monarch (George VI’s wasn’t, due to the rather swift change of plan that had originally involved his brother being King instead, and fitted poorly at the Coronation ceremony). They are heavy and wearing them takes some practice to get used to.
