Tell me about the Archos 605

I’ve reached the point where I need a highly portable entertainment gizmo. I need something for long plane rides full of my own music, possibly a DVD moved over, and the ability to show off digital photos without lugging around the laptop.

So I need something with a big screen that is lightweight and has a small form factor. (In true Dilbert style, I also want a satellite uplink that doesn’t interfere with every other electronic device around.)

My research led me to the Archos 605. I’d like to know what people’s experiences are with this gizmo. How complex is it to use, how good is the screen, loading music / photos / DVDs onto it, what alternatives exist.

Shameless bump.

I’ve got one of the earlier models and really like it. However my main requirement was that it be able to act as a USB host so I could download images from my camera and free up the memory cards. It’s too bulky for an everyday music player, but great for displaying images and watching video on flights.

I’ve been thinking about one, the fact that you have to buy plugins and a web browser has dissuaded me. Plus my 40GB iPod won’t die.
