Tell me about the Mercy Ministry

Does anyone know anything about the Mercy Ministry? Googling it brings up either that it is a christian based home for young women with mental/emotional disorders, or a cult that indoctrinates and carries out various dubious practices.

Dunno anything about them, but here’s the Wiki article. Sound like yet another crackpot “Christian” cult to me. I.e. : doesn’t have anything to do with what Christ ever said, but dang if that Jew didn’t do one hell of a free PR job !

I heard a radio interview with the founder and she seemed very nice. They are supported by Joyce Meyer ministries and Joyce was doing the interview. She talked about the prevalence of cutting amoung teenage girls and claimed to have success in dealing with that practice in her clients.

It is essentially a fundamentalist Christian home for women. It adheres to the obvious standards of the religion: no abortion or homosexuality. Furthermore, they are evangelic, so they do proselytize their clients. As pointed out, it is supported by Joyce Meyer ministries, so it uses her Christian counceling model.

Any of these things may be disliked by their opponents and considered dubious.

Could you say more about how helping girls in need goes against what Christ said?

If you are considering availing yourself of their services, please ask yourself if even considering a place that so much as registers on the “a cult that indoctrinates and carries out various dubious practices.” scale is the kind of place you want when there are many reputable places that don’t so register.

Gigi - can’t say specifically about what Christ said, but it may be that when making what may very well be life or death decisions about the conditions they purport to assist in, it is worth considering if there is perhaps a conflict of interest when the group that runs the services generally has as their philosophy a greater emphasis in the “afterlife” as opposed to success in extending this one.

I’m not.

Glad to hear that, all things considered. Hope all is well and getting better!

Aren’t you therefore saying that any Christian hospital is bad? I think it’s funny that people get offended when Christians try to help out. No one is forced to go to this shelter–there are other alternatives.

And, anyways, I seriously doubt you have ever read one of Meyer’s books on the subject. If so, this is an ad hominem attack. They’re run by Christians; therefore, they must be bad.
