I’m looking at new tires to purchase for my '02 Dodge Durango and noticed that the tires available in its size either have a “P” or “LT” as their class. I know P stands for passenger and LT stands for light truck. Will either work just fine for my SUV?
When I think of “passenger” I think of, well, passenger cars. Logically it seems to me that I would need a LT tire since I basically drive a “light truck.” I’m fairly certain this kind of reasoning is wrong; I’d just like to know why. What exactly do these classes mean? And will either perform well on my vehicle?
Until somebody who knows what they’re talking about comes along…
I always thought F-150s, Chevy 1500s, and Dodge 1500s were considered passenger, and that the F-250, Chevy 2500, and Dodge 2500 and above were considered light truck. Technically, the definition of light truck is one that has a payload capacity of 4,000 lbs (2 tons) or less. I think the class of “P” or “LT” just determines how many ply (IIRC, 4 ply or 6 ply for “P”, and 8 ply or 10 ply for “LT”). I’m more concerned with speed rating on my current vehicle, though; it’s been awhile since I’ve shopped for truck tires, so I could be totally off base here.
What do you use your Durango for? I’m guessing your tire purchases would be different if you use it to take the kids to soccer practice compared to doing construction work in the mountains.
If you just plan on routine driving, stick with the P’s. They give a much better ride.
I have a 1/2 ton PU with a towing package, and it is rated at 5/8 ton. Since I often pull a travel trailer, when I needed tires I went with LT’s, to replace the P’s. A good choice for my use, but it DOES ride rougher.
Regular driving? P’s, for sure.
Tried to edit my previous, but was too late.
Another consideration. LT’s require higher air pressure. Make sure your rims are appropriately rated for the higher pressures before going to LT’s…
Tire classes
They’ll often offer them at night schools. They give advice about how to cope when you’re exhausted.
Obviously, you flunked the comedian class.
Aw snap. Maybe if I’d taken some tire classes I’d know how to be funny after not sleeping
