Tell Me About Your Gastric Bypass Experience

She popped up somewhere else on this board. She’s doing OK, but life got in the way and she’s spending it elsewhere.

One more bump (possibly the last)…

On Friday, the bariatric center called: insurance approved me, and my gastric bypass has been scheduled for November 1st! :tada:

The liquid diet starts on 10/18 – which feels like both a year from now and tomorrow. Heh. I’ll be on that for a total of five weeks, so I’m planning how best to use up what’s in my fridge/pantry/freezer over the next three weeks.

This showed up (again) in my “Suggested Topics.” Congratulations, and keep us posted.

Good luck!!

I’m curious about some of the psychological evaluation processes as part of the pre-planning. What sorts of things go on with that? It’s a big concern for me, should I ever seriously consider this surgery: as I told my doctor “you don’t get to this size unless you have a bad relationship with food” and I genuinely worry about that aspect of things: not being able to eat much (and some things, never again) and having that be permanent and irrevocable.

Oh yeah: on the BMI: I crunched the numbers not that long ago and was surprised that my BMI is not super-high. I mean, it’s well into the “with comborbidities” range but it wouldn’t take all that much to get me below the 35 cutoff (as in 15 pounds would do it).

Thank you!

I completely understand your apprehension about that part! I had no idea what to expect, but the psych eval wound up being all of one 45-minute video chat with their therapist (I’m sure it would have been in-person if there weren’t a pandemic).

We did talk a little about how I eat and my triggers, but I think mostly she was checking for my attitude about the surgery — making sure I don’t believe it will be a quick/magic fix, etc. Near the end of my “session” I decided to take a chance and ask an honest question: I told her I was actually looking forward to the 5-week liquid diet because it would be a break from having to think/worry about food, and I asked if that was unhealthy. She said it made a lot of sense. {phew!} When we were done she said that she was going to recommend me for surgery, which was nice; I thought I might have to wait for a report or something.

She did suggest finding a cognitive behavior therapist, and I agree that therapy is probably a good idea. I actually found someone who seems like a possible fit and is nearby and in-network with my insurance company…I just have to pick up the phone one of these days.

The other behavior-related stuff was all online modules; just videos I watched. The only time I ever had to talk to someone was the 45-minute video chat.
