Point taken, and yet you remind me of another disingenous aspect of this turkey.
One thing I’ve always given Bush semi-points for is his simple Southern cordialness. Witness his congratulatory phone call to John Kerry after the latter’s primaries sweep (I’m sure this may be political tradition- it’s still just nice) or his unexpectedly gracious introduction for Clinton at Clinton’s portrait-unveiling at the White House. No matter how many things about the guy make me puke, I’ve never denied he at least shows some measure of class with this type of stuff. (He even mentioned asking Cheney to give Edwards a congratulatory phone call.) But when he makes a snide, schoolboy comeback like “Dick Cheney can be president”? It just completely mitigates any of that and reveals him the true rich boy snot that he is.
I forget the exact quote, but didn’t Kerry say, during the primaries, that Edwards was not fit (or something to that effect) to be the president?
I mean, come on… what do you want Bush to say: “Yeah, Kerry and Edwards are a better team than Cheney and me”? Or, he could have pulled a Gore and said: “**HOW DARE THEY ** nominate someone as inexperienced as Edwards.”
It’s politics, guys. And it’s going to get a lot worse…
“He can be President” was immediately followed by “Next question”, as if he actually wanted to be asked another question. I’m betting that question was anticipated and 'lil Georgie had to practice his answer in front of the mirror at least a thousand times before Cheney would let him out in front of reporters. BTW, since when are lying and cheating Southern values?
Odd. I assumed he meant they wouldn’t mind seeing Bush removed from office by impeachment.
Not that it would make any difference. As Senator Kerry implied, the POTUS is merely a Charlie McCarthy. The only real question is whether Bergen is Cheney or Rove.
Actually, no, Cheney can NOT be president. Isn’t his approval rating like 30%? How is it possible for the average american to LIKE Dick Cheney? He’s speeches are almost worse than Bush’s, his visage reminds me of the Penguin from Batman, and his demeanour seems stultifying. The President is supposed to be the face of america. How can we possibly send Cheney overseas to banter with foreign leaders? He would probably end up sealing them in the Cask of Amontillado if they disagree with him.
[nitpick] The Cask of Amontillado - Amontillado is a liquor (Spanish sherry, actually). No one was sealed in the cask of amontilado! The character Fortunato was lured into the catacombs by the promise of a drink, and it is in there that he was sealed up and left to die.[/nitpick]
Maybe I’m prejudiced, but I’ve always seen something petty and childish in Bush. For one thing, I don’t think he’s big enough to really take a joke; remember when he tried to get www.gwbush.com shut down because they made fun of him?
I suppose a junior senator is not the most-qualified person to be president. On the other hand, he is more qualified than the vast majority of people.
It is the content of a person’s character that makes a person suitable (or unsuitable) leader. Compare the unqualified Truman to the very qualified Nixon.
Of course, I know nothing of Edwards’ character, and quite a bit about Cheney’s.
