Just returned from the trip! All in all I had a great time, and find myself somewhat missing the place. Hopefully I can find the time (and budget) to go back there again.
Here are some [photos](Photo and Video Storage | Photobucket Trip August 2010/) to share with my fellow Dopers - of note is one where a monkey at Uluwatu got hold of a tourist’s spectacles and some local kids have to go after it. The guide had been showing us broken spectacles all around the trail before that.
Here’s a breathtaking view of the Uluwatu temple.
I was fortunate that my boss had a friend there and he did most of the driving. Yes, you guys are right, the traffic there is crazy; I have never seemed so many motorcycles and scooters jammed pack on the road. Kuta was crazy in that aspect; cars and bikes cramped onto a narrow two-lane road (and one side of it was down for maintenance). This actually give me some bad vibes about the area; it’s nerve-wrecking just for me to take simple walk.
On the other hand, the Sanur area is much cleaner, with broader roads, less traffic (and noise), and neater. Next time if I do go to Bali again, I’ll definitely keep to Sanur.
Besides shopping in Kuta (my colleagues did most of the buying though), we went down to Uluwatu and GWK. Uluwatu is both beautiful and dangerous, being so high up on the mountains. You have to wonder if any modern governments could allow a design like this any more. You can literally step out to the cliff side, as it is not walled or fenced. Common sense is the only safe guard here. And the view is breath taking.
Watched the Kecak dance at GWK, and I have to take a guess at what it was all about (no sub-titles!) and guess it’s from Ramayana. It reminds me of Chinese Beijing Opera in some sense, and really like how the ‘choir’ could double as the scenery.
Oh, thanks toofs for the suggestion to bring some preventive measure for diarrhoea and stomach upset. I guess the medication was a god-send for me as I eat lots of spicy food over at Bali (and I love spicy stuff!). They are, however, also fried and fattening too
The hotel that was booked for me is the Harris Riverview Hotel, and while the staff and accommodation is good, I am somewhat put off by its location. It’s 15 minutes walk away to Kuta, and walking along the road is not something I enjoy. I didn’t realise that Bali has no public transport whatsoever and didn’t budget for a driver or cab (that would eat up my funds too quickly). If only boss had situated me at a hotel closer to Kuta…
Then again, the traffic and noise could have kept me up all nights. Oh well, next time maybe I’ll try Ubud or Sanur.
