I couldn’t relate to any of it and I guess we’ll just have to disagree over whether those scenes were believable.
“Hot granny” is an oxymoron.
Well, I’m sorry but I’m just not into granny porn. I found the sight disgusting and I think most other people would too. There’s nothing hot about watching an old lady gum on an old man’s shriveled dick. I get it that old people have sex, I just don’t want to watch it. I am far from alone and just because I don’t have a granny fetish doesn’t mean I’m “immature.”
But so far, the show wants us to think there isn’t anything wrong with the relationship except that the dude doesn’t want to have sex anymore. I don’t find that credible. I didn’t find any of the male characters credible except the sleazy guy who doesn’t want to be monogamous.
I watched the second episode last night and think it was even worse than the first. It’s all the same fights over and over again. There’s no real movement in the story lines (the fussy little pussy still whines about feeling “pressured” to knock up his wife. The other guy still won’t bang his wife and still won’t say why. The young couple is still fighting because the guy is still a slime bag. I fast forwarded through the old couple scenes because who cares) and the sex scenes are more subdued. No prosthetics this time, just some missionary humping and a scene where the lady whose husband won’t have sex with her tries to masturbate, but you don’t see anything much in that scene (she puts a hand down the front of her pants so…no beaver shot) and she gives up quickly. All the 2nd episode did was reinforce my strong dislike for most of the characters. I can see why this show was so badly reviewed by the majority of the press.
I thought it was very poor. The characters were mostly unbelievable and unappealing. The sex scenes were gratuitous and not sexy. I actually thought the old folks were kind of sweet, maybe the only decent part.
After the first episode, I can’t see how any of the couples would stay together long enough for a whole season, and I don’t feel any urge to pull for them.
The use of the fake penis and apparent future use of fake vags is fucking ingenius on HBOs part. People would freak out if all of a sudden actual hadcore sex was being shown but since it’s really only a person and a piece of plastic you can get around that.
I thought the first ten or so minutes were rough but then it picked up. The young couple is annoying but young couples are annoying in general anyway.
The show is about SEX and the sex lives of these people.
How is the sex gratuitous?
The fact that the sex scenes weren’t sexy(*) speaks against their gratuitousness.
Almost any episode of the Sopranos had more gratuitous sex than this show can have in a whole season.
A show about people’s sex lives without showing sex would be a cop out.\
(*) And, that’s just you opinion (obviously). Siskel used to say no one can tell you if something is funny or sexy. I thought that the young girl was totally sexy, and started getting a stiffy when boyfriend was eating her box and her back started arching. I also thought the actress who couldn’t get pregnant, in various states of undress, was VERY sexy.
…because a guy automatically wants to fuck a hot woman on demand when there is nothing sexy about the approach or situation? I can safely say all men aren’t that base.
He didn’t want to fuck his wife because it wasnt about sex… it was about HER wanting his sperm… and as we learn later on, she doesn’t even really WANT his sperm… She just wants to be pregnant.
All of the tv critics I tend to agree with liked it. I was waiting for the DVD.
This thread is pretty much the opposite of the press I’ve been reading.
Have you ever tried to conceive a child? If it comes to the point where the woman is using a ovulation predictor, there is a certain urgency in the husband standing up and doing his part. Having a hot wife should make the situation bearable. Beyond that, when my wife wants some lovin’ she gets it, regardless of her reasoning. I have nothing to lose in the matter.
As I predicted earlier, I am sure that in future episodes we will find out that he doesn’t even want to have kids, but is too much of a pussy to tell her. That would explain a few things
I agree with Diogenes on pretty much every point wrt this show. I thought it was mawkish, pretentious, tried too hard to be daring, but wound up being laughable and boring. It was utterly horrendous IMO. My husband got up in the middle of it and said, “This is sooo stupid.” I watched until the end, and that’s 50 minutes of my life I can never get back.
Because it shows more “fake” sex than anyone might want to see. I don’t know about you, but I find simulated sex acts pretty boring to watch. Now, if they were really fucking, that’d be one thing, but they so obviously aren’t, so it comes off seeming cheesy and lame. Even the masturbation scene seemed contrived and weird. It wasn’t compelling at all, even when the participants were attractive. THAT is what makes it gratuitous. The suggestion of sex is often sexier than a simulated, obviously staged act.
Well, that’s just totally false IMO. There was not a lot of graphic sex in The Sopranos, and what sex there was always was necessary to the story, and not so graphic or drawn out that I was looking at my watch, wondering when it would end. All I could do during that protracted sex scene with the engaged couple was snicker and roll my eyes. That never happened during The Sopranos.
Couldn’t disagree more. My cite: Sex in the City, a show about sex and has the word “sex” in its title. *Tell Me You Love Me * is a show about love, and it has “love” in the title, so why do we have to watch Skinemax-quality softcorn pseudo-porn to learn about these people’s love lives? SitC had graphic scenes but they never felt belabored as they do in TMYLM.
Haven’t seen this (and probably won’t) but I find that a lot of these HBO series have characters that are so whacky, so completely out of control, that you just know that in real life these people could not function. IMO, that’s what happened with Six feet under. Nate and Brenda were so completely f’d up, that I lost all empathy with them.
It’s not that they’re wacky or out of control. They’re actually pretty banal, and overall, unlikeable. Their relationships evoke a mixture of disgust/pity, without much else to interest me. Maybe they are accurate depictions of many people’s lame, failing relationships, but… TV is supposed to be entertaining. It’s not a documentary, it’s an HBO drama. It made me feel desolate and bored and annoyed all at the same time.
anyone still watching this? I find the problems experienced by the characters to be somewhat realistic, and even the emotions they derive… however, the execution, presentation, and nature of the characters is WAY too dramatic and over-the-top.
I like the fact that there is nudity and sex every 5 minutes though…
