Tell the parent of an autistic kid

Thank you so much for that link. I imagine that must be the markers she’s referring to, and I can easily pick out the seven. It’s all mild differences or delays or deficiencies but they are there.

Today her teacher told me how she was amazed how Bella thinks. She hates to be corrected so lately if she has a bad mark on her paper she will erase her name and add another student’s. She’s only in Kindergarten! When I confronted her she was honest about it; she said she didn’t want it to be her paper anymore because it was messed up. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. She just doesn’t understand why that’s not acceptable behavior. She can figure out to write someone else’s name on a paper but if you ask, “Where are your shoes?” they could be right in front of her feet but she won’t understand the question, or she’ll take a long time trying to figure out what I want.

Thanks- I have not seen that list before, just the DSM criteria.

My son has all but ‘self-injury’ from that list.

Happy to help.

My 7yo self harms, she now sees a private counselor fortnightly and the school counselor weekly because the suicide talk combined with self harm freaked me the hell out.

I can so relate to this. My 6yo was sitting beside the TV remote this morning in hysterical tears because she could not find the remote. “It is beside you” and similar comments were not helping her so I ended up guiding her hand onto it. Just a typical day in our house

I remember one of the specialists asking me “So, what’s different around your house?” and me thinking “Nothing. Everything is normal at my house.”

Well, normal for us.

I had no real idea as to the number of quirks and problems we had adjusted or accommodated to until it was pointed out to us.

Here’s a pretty interesting short documentary on a non verbal autistic girl. It provides some pretty interesting insights. I don’t know how to do a spoiler box so I’ll leave it at that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4XMlhCfp3Q

That’s an incredible documentary. The amount of dedication that family had is mind-blowing.
