Tell them I never sold out (I bought a used G3!)

I am posting this on a Macintosh G3. So what, you ask? It ain’t one of those sexy cubes, you say? True, but it’s a quantum leap up from the Performa 6214 I’d been using until now (take a rest, Optimus, you’ve earned it…sniff).

I’d mentioned in SwimmingRiddles’ happy happy joy joy thread that I had resigned myself to getting a Wintel machine, even though I’m a Mac kid at heart. Someone (I think it was Tymp) mentioned that an enlightened brotha such as myself should look into a used Mac, if I couldn’t afford a new one. Enter my boy, who needed funds for his move to Portland, and lacked cargo space for his computer, which he was thus looking to unload. So I’ve bought myself a new Mac, and helped to finance my friend’s quest for the Best Life Ever.

Anyway, just thought I’d share. I’m very excited. I had no idea these web page things had pictures on 'em. Viva la Mac!

I type this from my Rev. C iMac, (266 MHz, 160 megs RAM, OS 8.6, and…Blueberry.)

I’d like to request some DETAILS on this used G3!! What model? Is it a Yosemite Blue and White G3, or one of the beige G3s, or what? What OS are your running? How much RAM? What size HDD???

Details, please!

And, congrats. Sounds wonderful. I am glad you stayed with Mac. (I am a recent “convert” to Macs, and I still use my Wintel machine sometimes. But I stay on my iMac as much as possible! I LOVE it!)

It’s one of the beige ones, running 300-some-odd MHz, 32 MB of RAM (I’ll be expanding that when I recoup my funds a bit), 4 GB HD, OS 8.1, 56k internal modem, and my friend threw in his Zip drive and all his software (Masters of Orion II! Woo hoo!). It’s named The Happy Deaff Star (my boy’s from the Bronx, they talk weird there).

Yeah, pass the specs, Lux!

And isn’t it nice to be able to use more current versions of software, especially web browsers? My mom’s old machine couldn’t run a browser version higher than 3 point something. When I got my own iMac in January, I had current everything installed. It was great.

yosemitebabe, when I first saw your SN in a Mac-related thread a couple months ago, I wondered if your SN had anything to do with the whole “Yosemite” G3 thing. Does it, by any chance?

Lux - the beige G3s are very good! You still have the advantages of your “old” SCSI and ADB peripherals, but you can add USB through a PCI slot. I think the beige G3s are still much-coveted in Mac circles. You lucky devil!

OS 8.1 is nice, I like OS 8.6 a little better, (but the difference isn’t that dramatic.) Glad to hear you will be getting more RAM soon! (Get the RAM before anything else!)

AudreyK…I am embarrassed to confess, I am not sure what “SN” means! (Other than “serial number”!) So I am not sure what your question is. However, I guess I’ll try to give it a shot.

I am a Yosemite National Park fan since childhood. (Many fond family memories of visiting the park!) Apple code-named the Blue and White G3 towers “Yosemite” (which delighted me!) Obviously, I would consider that a fabulous a name for a wonderful computer, so I like to mention it every chance I can!

Congrats, Lux…another Mac addict here!

yosemitebabe, I’m pretty sure that AudreyK is using SN to mean screen name.

DUH! Of course!

(I am used to “username”.)

Well, then I answered her question. Having “Yosemite” in my username is just a coincidence. I am a Yosemite National Park fanatic (check my web page) and Apple named one of it’s G3 computers “Yosemite”! Cool!

Yeppers indeedy, Cajun Man. Don’t worry, yosemitebabe, that ‘SN’ one threw me for a bit when i first saw it, too. And yes, you answered my question. I figured your name was either a G3 reference, or it had something to do with the park…

Lux, simulposted there.
