Tell us about a product that you were pleasantly surprised by its usefulness

Back in 2007, I started DIY car repair/maintenance. Since I was not sure how long I’ll continue, I got a cheap 110V Impact wrench from Harbor Freight with lug nut adapters. It is still going strong, and helped me do many brake jobs, CV joint replacement etc on many different cars. I have checked the torque it provides and it is pretty much in range.

I do have newer lithium impact wrenches now, but it is still my go to if I need to remove lug nuts.

This thing is called a “Piggy Steamer” and it’s one of those things you didn’t know you needed until you had it. It’s a silicone pot lid. You put it over a pot on the stove or a bowl in the microwave and it’s just a universal lid. If you put it over something that is steaming, the steam comes out of the nostrils, it’s hilarious.

I don’t know about you, but my kitchen features an eclectic collection of pots and pans of not always known provenance, some of which have matching lids, others not. I often find myself playing “find the correct lid” while cooking, and this thing saves me a ton of that. This is one of my favorite kitchen items.

I got a pot scraper as swag from some trade show I was at many years ago. It’s a simple thing, just a hunk of some sort of heavy plastic, nylon or similar material, about 2 1/2" square. One end has an fairly sharp edge, the other is rounded and has a little ridge for you to hang onto as you scrape crap out of your dirty dishes. I’ve had it so long that the vendor’s emblazoned name has since worn off. It’s very handy and it still gets used every day.

We throw those in Christmas stockings and gift bags because they’re surprisingly useful.

Is the hat the link leads to the casual hat or the dress hat?

I’ve always used old AARP member cards that come in the mail to scrape my dishes - or old credit cards.

That’d be the dress hat. The casual is more of a goldish-yellow (now discontinued apparently).

I’ve done that too. But the little gizmo of which I speak works much better. The scraping end is tough but somewhat flexible. The handle end is larger and easier to hang onto with wet fingers than a credit card. You’ll have to pry my pot scraper from my cold dead hands! I just hope it never falls into the garbage disposal

The “Piggy Steamer” looks like just what I want to use in the microwave to cover a bowl. I had been using a little silicone mat thing that I bought at Daiso, but it’s too limp and will often slump down into the food. I put a Piggy Steamer into my shopping cart on Amazon and the next time I place an order I’ll include it.

Thanks for the tip!

Microwave bacon grill. Works much better than I expected without splatters.

23,600 reviews convinced me to try it. So far the plastic is resisting the heat. I was concerned it might warp.

I bet you’ll have the same problem with the piggy steamer. What you need is something rigid with a dome.

Try these as an example:

I’m not endorsing that particular brand or item, but Amazon sells a couple hundred varieties of similar items.

My new wife brought a lot of IMO useless kitchen gadgets with her when we combined households. But her set of two of these for salad-size plates and 2 more for dinner sized plates are far from useless. In fact they’re used daily.

I’d never seen such a thing till she brought them in.

The Piggy Steamer is fairly stiff. It’s never slumped into my food before.

This reminds me how much I like my magnetic microwave food cover.

My contribution is a cordless, battery operated water pick (I.e. water streamed teeth flosser).

I hate flossing, so on the advice of a dentist I had purchased a nice water pick, but it had to be plugged in, so I never bothered to use it (too annoying to fill with water and too messy when brushing my teeth in the sink).

So, instead, I picked up a handheld battery powered version. They are waterproof, so it’s in the shower and part of my morning routine. Since I’m already in the shower, it’s easy to fill from the faucet, and I don’t care how messy it gets.

I do 2 rounds - the first with just hot water, and the second with water mixed with mouth wash. My dental care has never been better.

I don’t think you should put magnets in a microwave.

The magnets are polymer-encased and safe. This product has been around for several years and is sold by many vendors.

Ahhh… a perfectionist. I usually go with “close enough”

We got one of those in a raffle basket we won once. Didn’t know what it was for. Sat in a drawer forever, until my son joined the Boy Scouts; learned what it was doing dishes on a camping trip; love it!

I have several scrapers made by Pampered Chef.* I think they were freebies when my wife bought some of their items. Pretty useful little doodads. I haven’t tried yet, but I bet they would make dandy caulk smoothing tools. Three choices of curved corners.

*Whenever I hear “Pampered Chef”, I picture a Chef wearing disposable diapers.

Speaking of Pampered Chef, my then wife got a few chip clips from one of their parties over twenty years ago. I still have them and recently bought a few more. Super inexpensive and work very well.
