Do you keep supplies of cash, medicine, water, ammo, gasoline, or so forth around in the event of catastrophe?
If so, tell us!

No. But I now keep a working flashlight on the table by my front door. One too many power outages have convinced me to do that.
I probably should keep a gallon or two of water handy. This summer’s pipe burst was a huge pain. I could have avoided the panic lines at the stores.
No I don’t, not a single one. Nowhere.

I squirrel 20s everywhere. Odd compartments of my wallet, in each car, etc. Though the prevalence of ATMs and card-taking cash registers has decreased their usefulness, there have been plenty of times that having a twenty has saved the day.
Please don’t mug me.
I have caches of things I want to read stashed several places at home, work, and in my car. Does that count?
I keep some cash in various places. And, of course, prior to that tragic boating accident in late 2008, I had caches of guns/ammo. I expect to return to that practice shortly after the first Tuesday in November, 2012.
Always. Living in earthquake country it would be silly not to. We try to always have at least 2 months worth of food on hand, as well as other supplies should the Big One hit. The cats have a 1 month backup. After that they can eat what we eat. Water is stored in 7 gallon plastic jugs in various places inside and out - enough for a week at least.
Yup, yup, yup… I’ve always had the ‘Be Prepared’ motto running since I was young. Living on the coast in Florida and dealing with hurricane evacuations keeps me prepared.
A large first aid backpack with about anything needed short of surgery. Full bag of camping supplies, tent, air matress, blankets, large tarp. Full size backpack with survival tools, water purifier, machete’, tape, rope, fire starters, lumi sticks, space blankets, plastic sheeting, aluminum foil, mini camp stove and fuel. Have a soft cooler loaded with camp cook supplies, plates, forks, coffee & pot, spices, sealed bags of rice / beans, cutting board, large mess set. Ammo split equally into to cartridge containers and guns ready to go.
I’m not a whack doomsday survivalist, but how many people in Haiti wish they had what I have at the ready?
later, Tom.
My attorney has advised me not to respond to this thread.
Two months? Can’t hurt, but do you really expect an earthquake to cut you off from normality for that long? Or is the time period in case of larger societal breakdowns?
Do you also keep two months worth of other supplies? Toilet paper? Soap? Medical? (Though one trip to Sam’s Club keeps us stocked in that and mayo for a year).
First aid kit, blanket, set of assorted tools and a decent shovel in each of my vehicles.
Bug out bag by my back door with copies of important papers, first aid/hygiene kit, two 1-liter canteens and water purifying kit, box of energy bars, spare set of clothes and light jacket, Leatherman multi-tool and kinetic powered flashlight/radio.
I try to keep a bit of cash on hand but it’s kind of hit or miss as to whether or not I’ll have any at a given moment. If I need emergency funds, I do have a few dozen silver eagle coins that I could use.
Well, I try to make sure the tank of my car is always half full…
I stash a bottle of wine! Some Saturday nights I’m too lazy to go out and buy one. Also- I “skim” money from the family budget and surprise everyone in Spring or Summer with some vacation cash-
Prepare for the worst and you’re never surprised.
If we are at full stock, then it is usually a couple of months worth of other supplies. Like you said, one trip to Costco can really set you up for a while. Non-perishables are bought in bulk whenever there is a sale. Food-wise, between a well-stocked pantry, camping supplies and a stash of MREs and buckets from Wise, we have food supplies for quite a period. A big enough earthquake hits, SoCal will turn into a war-zone. Being able to stay under the radar for a couple of months just seems prudent.
I keep several close relatives within walking distance, and an emergency ladder in my second floor bedroom. At any given time I probably have at least a month’s worth of food in the house. We have a well and a stream running through the yard, so we’re good for water. And a rustic cabin about ten miles away that is completely off the grid and would probably prove to be a pretty good compound if the apocalypse came.
We have two 46 gal totes stored in a shed outside the house as earthquake preparedness.
They have non-perishable food, water, blankets, clothing, first aid stuff, radio, flashlight and batteries, enough for 4 people for 3 days. There are only two of us, so we’ll share with our neighbors, if necessary.
Yes: but only our daughter’s diabetes supplies. I reorder every chance I can: a 3 month supply usually lasts longer than 3 months, so we can squirrel away some stuff. And I’ll be able to order again soon before the end of the year, and since I’ve met my deductible, I won’t pay anything.
Candy. I keep some in the fridge, some in my desk drawer, some in my spare room cupboard, and some in a secret place that I tell no one.
I also have 3 places at work where I stash candy/munchies. I HAVE to, or my coworkers would eat it all!
So I am prepared for emergencies both at home and the office.
I assume you’re still going last-received-last-used, yes?
How long does insulin last, even refrigerated?
We have a box of 20 votive candles in glass holders, plus a candle lighter, in the linen closet. In case we ever have a power outage… which we don’t ever. shrugs
