Tell us an interesting random fact you stumbled across (Part 1)

Well, it seems like I’ve been a bit naive about white-collar financial crimes and the old canard “crime don’t pay”. This makes my moral compass spin like a record, round round…

That’s why Rudy Giuliani, Milken’s prosecutor, decided to join them. He literally couldn’t beat them.

About 20 years ago, I made a joke about the Afghan war. I said they should call it Half-and-again-stan, because everything we try to do there costs half-and-again as much as we thought. Looking back, I see my math was vastly optimistic. If only it had been that cheap!

You have the highest chance of hitting a deer with your car in Pennsylvania, where the odds are 1/63.

I believe it! I’ll go several weeks without not seeing a deer while driving.

1/63 over what period of time?

It doesn’t say, so I assume that’s an overall, instead of something like 1/63 during hunting season. Although, double checking a different source, they claim PA is only the third highest behind Montana and West Virginia. It’s apparently hard to pin down because different states use different criteria.

1/63 over a lifetime of driving actually seems low to me. Maybe because the large number of people doing most of their driving in cities and big towns drive the number down?

I’m not sure. I’m just relaying what I read. I’m not sure how they arrived at the number they used.

Curiously, it seems that field hockey in the United States is played only by girls and women. This gender association makes no sense to me.

While field hockey in the US, it is true, is dominated by female players, it’s by no means only females.

THAT’S interesting!

Models of the Earth’s formation show xenon should be at a much higher concentration in the atmosphere that what it is. Scientists can’t explain why. Some have hypothesized that the xenon is hiding inside the Earth. Others disagree.

For some reason I was trying to remember Detroit Tiger players from my youth and recalled Aurelio Rodriguez, an excellent 3rd baseman. I learned this bizarre coincidence from Wikipedia:

“There have been three players in major league history named Aurelio (two of whom played for the Detroit Tigers), and all three were killed in car accidents between the ages of 44 and 52. See also Aurelio López and Aurelio Monteagudo.”

So the latter would be xenonphobic?

Perhaps this is xenon’s paradox.

When octopi reproduce, after laying the eggs, the Mom stays guarding them till they hatch. Then she dies shortly after!

The gestation period from laid to birth? 4+1/2 years!

Yikes!

Apropos of nothing, the phrase ‘bite your tongue’ is commonly attributed to Shakespeare.

You can count from zero to one hundred without once seeing the letter ‘a’.

Lots of stuff is attributed to Shakespeare. What it really means is that the oldest know source of those words and phrases is in Shakespeare. It’s a near certainty that he didn’t invent them since he was writing for the masses.
