Tell us an interesting random fact you stumbled across (Part 1)

The top predator of mooses are orcas.

Interesting. I suppose moose do swim in salt water from one place to another.

Do you have a cite though? I’d like to read about this.

We have a lot of moose where I live. They aren’t afraid of anything. No orcas though

Thanks.

hajario may have seen this video.

From the article:

Orcas (Orcinus orca ) are the moose’s only confirmed marine predator as they have been known to prey on moose and other deer swimming between islands out of North America’s Northwest Coast. However, such kills are rare and a matter of opportunity, as moose are not a regular part of the orca diet.[66] There is at least one recorded instance of a moose preyed upon by a Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus ).

So it seems orcas are a predator of moose, possibly even the top marine predator, but not the top predator overall.

Yeah, that would be I believe man.

We like our moose. I named one Fredrick. They would chomp on the grass in our ‘yard’ about 30 feet away from us when we are on the lower deck. We leave them alone, they leave us alone. Haven’t seen them this year.

My Wife got surrounded by 4 coyotees a couple of weeks ago. We do carry bear/cougar spray now. Should do the trick. Firearms are problematic in such a situation.

This gives me an excuse to bring up a video I once saw of a pack of wolves attacking a moose.

It sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Nsture in the raw. A pack of ravenous wolves working together to bring down a creature several times their size.

But in the video, the wolves didn’t look like that deadly pack of killing machines. They looked like a lost group of suburban pet dogs who had been promised that, if they brought down this moose, they’d be taken back to their nice warm homes and given a bowl of kibble.

The wolves stood on a slight rise, sheepishly regarding this enormous moose standing in a couple of inches of water. Every now and then the wolf in front would run down behind the moose and try to bite one of its rear legs while trying to avoid getting severely kicked. Usually it wouldn’t succeed in biting anything. It would then go to the end of the line and a new wolf would try to build up enough courage to dart down and try to bite the moose’s leg.

It didn’t look at all as if they were going to succeed, unless the moose fell asleep before they did.

It’s interesting, because they seem so casual. Sort of like bison I guess. But to me anyway, that’s a sign that they are not afraid.

My Wife and her best friend went for a walk once and a moose started coming down the trail. The friend, startled, dove into a ditch. My wife just stood there. The moose went back into the woods off the trail.

I think that’s the way wolves and hunting dogs hunt moose. Dogs only have to keep the moose in place until a human gets there with a gun. That’s the specialty of the Norwegian Elkhound. Wolves could spend a long time harassing that moose with leg bites until it falls. Lot’s of good eatin’ from one moose for a wolf pack.

TIL that only four states have a Surgeon General.
If that’s true, it’s insane.

Should every US state have its own surgeon general? California latest state to have top doc | The Nation's Health.

Dramatization:

That might be true but meaningless. I imagine that every state, or nearly so, has a state Department of Public Health, or something of the sort, and every one of those departments must have someone in charge of it, who’s probably in most cases an MD. The “interesting fact” here might just be that in only four states does that individual carry the official title of “Surgeon General”.

In 1968 Tiny Tim appeared in a movie singing a duet of Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe with Eleanor Barooshian, He sang the Cher part.

I just heard this a couple nights ago on Fargo Season 5, Episode 4. Very surreal!

We just watched season 5 of Fargo a few weeks ago. I now remember hearing the song from the show but didn’t place the singers or anything. Well, alright then.

If I hadn’t heard it literally 2 nights ago, I doubt I’d have remembered.

Bobby Shantz is a (long retired) MLB baseball pitcher who is 98 years old (two living former players are older). He started his career in 1949 with the Philiadelphia A’s, who were managed then by Connie Mack. Mack had started his managing career with Pittsburgh in 1894 - 55 years previously.

Connie Mack was born in the early days of the Civil War.

I think that’s frozen sea foam. It’s still a cool effect.
