As Benjamin Franklin is supposed to have said: Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
Who would have thought that that wisdom went back to ancient Egypt? Prost!
Prost to you too! Though I have to admit that I sip on a glass of French wine at the moment…
Would a “Got the day off school because the mountain is on fire” margarita disqualify me? Or is that extra points?
Not at all, if that’s your excuse for drinking, then an extra Prost to you!
heresy you speak
NFL - the 49ers beat the Giants 32-19 Monday night. Apparently - that was the first time in history that an NFL game had been decided by exactly a 32-19 score.
That’s called a Scorigami. There are occasional discussions of that phenomenon in the weekly NFL thread.
It’s been over 50 years since a Democratic President has died (LBJ in 1973).
It wasn’t against the Giants, but an equally pathetic NY football team, the Jets.
What was your source for this? I’m dubious for a few reasons, first because of the distinctly modern ideas in the text, second because while I see a number of references to this text on the Net, they are all blogs and similar things, nothing seemingly authoritative, and third because the idea that there is still gold in an Egyptian temple that hasn’t been robbed out seems unlikely to me. I haven’t even been able to find any evidence that there is a “Temple of Sekhmet” at Karnak.
Hmmm, good question, it’s one of those things I wrote it out, on a slip of paper after reading it somewhere. A habit I’ve long had. I’ve no idea where I read it, must have been ages ago. Just found the slip of paper again, in the bottom from a dusty box while cleaning the attic space.
Oh well. I still like it. Either way.
Much-maligned by whom? That stuff was good.
I don’t buy that it was “a tweaked version of Velveeta”, though, because government cheese was a fairly hard cheese, not at all like the squishy Velveeta.
The actual quote was about wine, and a reference to the Miracle at Cana:
Though Franklin did have other quotes in praise of beer, and probably would have agreed with the sentiment for either beverage.
Ah, the internet, the internet… it lead me astray, you lead me back on course. You are right, ignorance fought!
By me for one. I don’t remember exactly how my grandmother would get it but if it was free it was for her. She got more than she could possibly use so we got the rest. It was awful stuff. I don’t know if it’s better now.
Another fan of “government cheese” here. I didn’t qualify for it myself, but a friend was and since no one in his family cared for cheese he would pass it on to me.
We call cheese like American or Government cheese “meaty cheese”. It serves a purpose. I wouldn’t serve it on a charcuterie board, but it is fine in an omelette or sandwich.

My grandma was getting it in the early 80s and would give us some when she had too much. It was really good cheese. It was kind of like the American cheese you can get that isn’t “singles”. We used it for grilled cheese and cold sandwiches.
Wife’s aunt would give us Government cheese. Tasted like common American cheese. Good enough for the kid’s grilled cheese.

“melty cheese”. Dammit.
