Temporary Moderators

In a thread in IMHO, TVeb explains that, while a thread would actually fit better in MPSIMS, she’s not going to move it because the web is jammed up. She also points out that 4 of our Moderators live (and still live, which is great news) in NY.

Here is what I’m thinking. These people are busy (Alphagene, for one) putting their own lives back together and helping others do the same. They may have lost friends and family yesterday. They might not have the time/energy/patience to properly moderate this message board. So could we initiate temporary moderators, just until things calm down a little? I’m not old enough to do the job (you have to be 21, right?), but there are plenty of people who are. I would be more than happy to help and I’m guessing that there are at least a few dopers who feel the same.

Just a suggestion.

A very smart idea.

You all are doing a great job. I’m assuming that this place is quite a lot busier, due to recent events, and you all are keeping it well organized and under control. So thanks for that.

And you are just generally a good bunch. Just thought I’d let you know.

I don’t know how much I can help, but I’ll offer up my services. As long as spelling isn’t a major requirement (a nod to the #sd folks.)

I currently have a whole ton of spare time on my hands as I’m unemployed, and I have a reliable cable connection, so if I can be of any service, my email is in my profile.

A good idea, and if it’s at all practicable I’m more than willing to help out. I’m imagining that the mods do already have files (of some sort) of many people who have applied to be moderators in the past - perhaps they could call on these reserves if it’s needed.

I would also volunteer. Also unemployed and have fairtly strong service.

Any capacity, let us know, mods. We’d be more than glad to help in any way.

I’d be willing to pitch in, even if it’s just as a voice of sanity. I’m also unemployed right now and am on the SDMB nearly constantly.

Even if we don’t take you up on the offer(which is greatly appreciated, believe me!), you can help out by letting me know in IMHO by e-mail any problems you see, from double posts to requests by OPs to correct posts to misplaced(IYHO, of course) threads that should be in other forums. Doing this by e-mail accomplishes two things:

  1. It keeps the infighting down to a minimum.
  2. This way nobody finds out how many mistakes I actually make!

Hey, you guys are welcome for the offer. We love this place and we’re happy to help any way we can. As for emailing you guys, absolutely. Again, happy to help.

Ditto. I’m at work and don’t have a ton of time to post but I do have evenings and weekends, where I could help out on a temporary basis: I’d be happy to be a member of either:

The Junior Mod-chucks

or

The Cecil Street Irregulars (“Quick, Czarcasm! A troll’s afoot!”)

Your pick!

Fenris

Me too, me too. I could stop Fenris when he breaks the “No Trollhunting except via email rule.”

Trolls have **feet[/b’??

I like Cecil’s Junior Mod-Chucks. ::MsRobyn ties on her neckerchief and makes the CJMC salute::

I am privileged to help the mods out in any capacity necessary. As Silver said, we love this place and would hate to see it turn into a free-for-all.

Technically, I think only boy Dopers become Junior Mod-Chucks if we stay true to the source material. Girls should traditionally become Cecil’s Junior Chickadee Mods which, frankly is a gawdawful bad name. I say: Th’ hell with accuracy to the source material! Cecil’s Junior Mod-Chucks should be open to all genders!

I’m a little soldier for Unca Cece! WOO!

[sub]Why do I feel like I’m back in Sunday School all of a sudden?

Of course trolls have feet. If they didn’t, how could they keep putting them in their mouths?

I’d be happy to be a Junior Mod-Chuck, as I’m a stay-at-home-mum with a (usually) good service, but the approach of quietly tugging a Mod’s coat tail and saying “Mister? Please Mister? Someone’s made a mess in the corner, Mister” and then letting the Mods actually clean the mess up has a certain appeal!

Waitaminute, I’m not wearing coattails.
YEOUCH!

The idea has certain merit, but I don’t think this is a good time to rock the SDMB boat, even if it is done with good intentions. I think it is preferable to simply keep the moderators’ workload down to a minimum by:
[li]Not posting threads in the wrong forums[/li][li]Keeping shitfights to a minimum to avoid thread closure[/li][li]Generally adhering to the Prime Directive[/li][sub]
The only moderator I ever dissed in the past was Manhattan. His posts since this disaster have proven him to be a thorough gentleman. And, well, I’m just glad the fascist control freak is ok.
