Looking fairly comfortable for Federer. I don’t think Soderling’s even got to deuce on Federer’s service and that was a fairly comprehensive demolition in the tie-break.
What’d I miss?
Yeah and with 5 straight ~132 MPH aces at that!
A guy came out on the court, waved a flag. Then, he “attacked” Federer, trying to put a beret on his head. Federer wrestled with him for about 5-10 seconds, then security came out.
The dude ran from security and Federer, jumped over the net, then got tackled by a security guard and carried away.
It was actually pretty scary for about 5 seconds, though. I wasn’t sure if he was goofing or actually attacking Federer.
Yikes. The first thing that comes to mind is Monica Seles.
Exactly. It won’t look serious when you watch replays, but live it was a bit freaky for a few seconds. He made physical contact with Roger before security could help.
Roger wins! I’m so happy for him!
YESSSS!! It was my hope that he could win his 14th on clay…
Ideally he shoulda beat Nadal, but I suppose he can only beat who he plays and he DID beat the guy who beat Nadal so that’s something. He also beat Nadal on clay last month.
It was nice to see him so excited.
I think he was ready to give even Nadal a run for his money today. He really looked prepared to win it.
Despite the scoreline it was quite tense in the closing stages with Federer missing some easy shots. It was great to see Agassi presenting the trophy.
That’s beautiful. Did I miss anything important in the post-match commentary?
It actually looked like nerves. He’s human after all!
So very happy for Federer. He got very tight after securing that break in set three but hung on. After set one Soderling was quite good but not on the same level.
I thought Federer was the best I’ve seen before today. Before Sampras set the record I never ever heard anyone say Emerson was the best - it was always Laver. I don’t know how the tennis world feels about Sampras and Laver but I rate Federer ahead of Sampras for the dominance of 04-08 and his much better record on clay. It was great to see the premier tennis artist of our time complete what may be his most satisfying win ever.
I totally forgot about the final and didn’t turn on the TV until noon. :smack:
On the bright side, I’m getting to watch the replay of that transcendent Wimbledon final now
Rafa has a bad right knee. Wimbledon is looking pretty unlikely for Nadal. Dang.
Bad enough to have surgery?
Congratus to Fed for this win.
And upon hearing so much about Nadal’s knee, I am going to go ahead and have to retract by page one statements about Roger not breaking Pete’s record.
That record is all Roger’s come Wimbledon.
That's because Emerson won his titles before the Open era and many of the best were professionals who couldn't play grand slams. When he did play the pros he was regularly beaten by the likes of Gonzales who was much older. Emerson was definitely not one of the all-time greats.
Great win for Federer. He tops Sampras for me simply because he is so much better on clay. Sampras’ game just didn’t work on clay. Furthest he got was to the 1/4 finals I think.
That said, hard to say if he is the best. For example, Connors played in what I consider a much more competitive era and that should be taken into account.
Sampras just switched his pick for “greatest ever” from Laver to Federer. That’s good enough for me.
No discussion of the greatest player is complete without Pancho Gonzales; I just found this nice videowhich has some footage of his game. Check out his serve at around 4:30 ; I don’t know if anyone in the entire wooden racket era matched his power.
The Wiki article on [Gonzales](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancho_Gonzales)gives you a sense of how different professional tennis was before the Open era. A lot of the tennis was organized around interminable series between the top players; for example in 56-57 Gonzales played a 76 match series against Rosewall beating him 50-26.
