Henin comes back from 0-2 in the third to beat Sharapova.
Down goes Henin, to Stosur.
Huge upset! I’m looking forward to the replays.
I wouldn’t call it huge - Stosur has the best record on clay on the WTA Tour this year, and reached the semi-final of Roland Garros last year. She took Henin to 3 sets in the final at Stuttgart a month ago.
With Justine losing on “her” surface, can we expect her to win Wimbledon like she wants?
She came back with the intent of changing her game to improve on grass and apparently her serve being strange is now costing her the tournament she normally had reserved as the winner already.
In NZ we are getting the Australian commentary team & a guy who sounded like Fred Stolle called it a huge upset.
The Autralian team have been great - very fair & balanced.
Then he doesn’t know what he is talking about. The bookmakers were offering about 3-1 against Stosur. Upset, yes, huge, no. And it will not be a huge upset if she beats Serena either. She’s seeded 7 for a reason.
It’s not like she can’t play at Wimbledon- she’s made the final twice. If she’s serving as badly as people have said, that doesn’t bode well for Wimbledon. The serve would be a bigger deal over there.
I saw about two sets of the Sharapova match but it’s hard for me to get a read on where she’s at. She insists she doesn’t think she’ll be at her best this season.
The loss to Stosur is not as big in reality as it looks on paper. Henin owned this tournament for years, but she hadn’t played here since 2006. Stosur had more success on clay this year. I know Clijsters won the U.S. Open last year and Henin definitely had the better career of the two of them, but that kind of thing is just not going to happen very often.
The Federer-Oldman match is coming up in a few hours. This should be another good one. I’ve said before that I think Federer’s semifinal streak is probably going to end this year and that it’ll probably happen at the French if it’s going to happen anywhere- but now that we’re down to brass tacks I do think he’ll win today. Soderling really pushed him in New York and he believes he can hang with Federer now, but Federer’s just been in this situation too many times.
Missed the Henin-Stosur match. Bummer. Hope they show it again as the three channels (TTC, ESPN2 and NBC) tend to show the same three matches over and over and over. Every time I turned on the tv I saw Petrova beating Venus or Serena beating Peer.
Goooo Nadal!
Soderling just took the second set from Federer.
I should add, Fed won the first set, though.
Whoa.
Soderling is up 2 sets to 1 on Federer.
Soderling is serving for the match against Federer.
Soderling is about to serve for the match in the fourth set. Federer actually had a break point to win the third set, but he couldn’t close it. Then the rain came, and Soderling got a quick break and won that set. He just took Federer’s serve again and it’s 5-4 Soderling. Federer did get a break to start the fourth set but it looks to me like he can’t get much headway against Soderling here. This would be an amazing win for him.
Wow.
This is tight.
Fed is making errors.
The streak of semi finals and finals is over.
Fed is out.
I feel bad for Federer.
Now everyone is going to grill him about his loss like it’s a big deal. I mean, it is, but everyone loses.
And that’s it. Wow. Great win for Soderling. Federer’s streak is finally over after six years - the last time he didn’t reach at least the semifinals at a major was at the French in 2004. You’re never going to see a run like that again. Looks like Soderling is going to get Berdych in the semis.
With that, Soderling according to the announcers is the only person to beat both Nadal and Federer in the French Open.
Is this a bad omen for Nadal if he’d like to win it again?
