Venus looked like she was wearing an apple pie crust around her stomach. I didn’t get that one. I couldn’t stay away until the end of her match, but she injured a hip muscle and it doesn’t sound like her prospects for making it to the end of the tournament are very good. I wish I’d been able to watch Federer-Simon, on the other hand. I did follow it with the Match Tracker function, but that’s not the same.
I watched it live this morning and then when I got to work I switched to the Audio commentary. THAT was bizarre but at least it gave me more info than the Match Tracker.
It did look like an apple pie crust! & the skirt was too short.
I saw part of the Federer-Simon match but it went to late. Simon is my new favourite. I wish they had met later in the tournament.
Sounds like Verdasco was lucky to scrape through.
Here are some good pictures of Venus’s outfit from her 2nd match and the lattice pie.
there is a good shot of the flesh colored undergarment.
You know, had Venus paired that top with a longer skirt of the same color, or even a simple pattern with the color somewhere in it, it might have been an okay outfit.
At least she’s not wearing those godawful cap sleeves.
The only women’s outfit that I’ve really liked this year was, I believe, worn by Vera Zvonareva. It was a K-Swiss purple top with a yoga-inspired back, paired with a simple white skirt.
Here it is:
I am amazed that many (most?) of the tennis players wear the same outfit for every match.
I follow golf, and a highly ranked golfer would never wear the same outfit during tournament week.
I believe they all bring two outfits per tournament, one primary plus an alternate. I could be mistaken, though.
That sounds about right. I think most of the players work out in advance with their sponsors what they are going to wear at the tournament. The Williamses design their own outfits and most other players don’t, but that probably includes them.
I can understand using one style of outfit, for comfort etc. But I have seen women players wear the same color, match after match after match.
obviously the guys can and frequently do change shirts, but usually those are the same color.
Yes Wimbledon limits the color choices to white…and white.
ESPN is picking up the matches at 11 instead of 9 tonight. I don’t think there is a free watch online option for this tournament, unlike the US Open, which is too bad. But I see Jankovic was upset in the second round, so that’s a bump in the road for her comeback. Clijsters won. Nadal is struggling… in that someone finally won a game off him.
Just watched Murray win handily. Now Baghdatis is taking on DelPotro. DelPotro, predictably, isn’t in top form yet. Shame because when he was playing at the US Open two years ago, he could have beaten anyone, IMO, including Nadal.
Nadal is looking incredibly sharp and focused. Occasional double faults, but only when he’s up so much that it’s looking like a blow out.
Didn’t get to see any of Djokovic’s second match, but I heard he had a bit of trouble.
He beat the crap out of Nadal in the US Open that year. Nadal was hurt at the time and he’s better now, but when Del Potro gets fully health again, he has the size and the power to compete with anybody. Right now he’s down a break in the fourth set, though, so it looks like he’s just about out of time.
Nadal is going to be a big favorite in his next match, of course, but he’s playing Tomic, who is Australian. So if Tomic hangs with him early it’s possible the crowd will get behind him and the match will get interesting. Then again it might be a night match.
They were saying that Del Potro will be dropping into the 400’s after today’s match, but that he will still receive wild cards into most events. I hope he can keep his head together and put in the time to get back to where he was.
Tsonga won too! I would love to see him go deep into the draw, but I just don’t have confidence that he can make it to the end.
Del Potro made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open last year (those were the only matches he played on tour in 2010), so relative to last year he’ll lose points for being beaten in the second round. But a big part of the challenge in getting to the top of the rankings is getting in to the tournaments where you can earn a lot of points. If he’s getting wildcards into those tournaments, he won’t be in the 400s for very long. The bigger question is improving his stamina after a long layoff, but as long as he doesn’t get hurt again I’m sure he’ll do that. He’s coming off a major injury but he’s still only 22.
Novak is fine. He lost the second set to Dodig in a tiebreaker and then pretty much demolished him in the next two, 6-2, 6-0.
I think Petrova’s outfit was even worse than Venus’s. It may have looked OK on a 15 year old, but it made Nadia look like one of those synthetic pastel coloured Christmas trees. Nothing wrong with her game in beating Molik though.
& Stosur’s outfit looked more like a cover up that you would wear to the beach. Again nothing wrong with her game.
As far as good outfits go I liked Ivanovic’s. Looked far better on her than Princess Hantuchova. The colours & fit weren’t right on the later.
As for Venus this remark on the Stuff website exactly sums up my feelings - This is what happens when no one will say no to a celebrity. Someone close to her needs to tell her to stick to the tennis because she has no creative talent at all.
I guess no one is commenting on the men’s outfits because other than Monfils, so far they have been pretty dull. Also like Ferrer & Soderlings gear.
Sad to hear Nalbandian has pulled out due to illness.

Ouch. I saw that he lost, but I didn’t notice until just now that he was down 6-1, 6-0, 2-0 and then retired. It sounds like he was so exhausted from the Hewitt match that he was dizzy out there. That’s a shame.
There are some interesting matches tonight. Wozniacki had better be on her game against Cibulkova, and the same goes for Roddick (and I mean his take-charge game) against Haase. Monfils vs. Wawrinka should be good. I thought Henin vs. Kuznetsova could be interesting, but based on their history it probably wno’t be. Henin has won 16 of the 18 times they’ve played.
Re the men’s outfits,
I appreciate that they’ve shortened the shorts a few inches so that we can see some quadricep. Another inch or two on the hem would be okay with me as I’m a big fan of the quadricep. Mmm Mmm.
I didn’t like Djokovic’s outfit. I’d have preferred the shirt to be paired with a solid black short.
I liked Nadal’s neon pink shirt when it was dry, but when he started to sweat it started to cling to him. Normally, that’s not a terrible thing, but the shine kind of squicked me out. It was a good color combination, though.
Federer’s outfits always are predictable and boring. I’d love to see him come out once in awhile in something that is completely different, especially during charity challenges.
One of the men (Michael Russell?) wore a sleeveless shirt and it was all wrong. He had nice biceps, but he was white as a ghost. Not a good look.
The dead spot on one courts was really an odd happening. They stopped the match and the umpire got out of the seat and there was a small dead spot in the court. The umpire bounced a ball on the court and the ball literally did NOT bounce. It was like it was landing in sand.
A guy came out and drilled a hole in the court and it apparently released an air pocket. A Tennis court version of CPR I guess.
