Tennis 2012 Thread

I was hoping that Mayer would be able to keep up against Djokovic, but no go. Still, I’m looking forward to another Fed/Djok match-up. Both players want this one very badly.

Hope the Murray match will be more entertaining. Wouldn’t it be spectacular if Ferrer were to break through to the finals? But how can I root against Murray given the immense pressure he’s under?

Once again, no invitations from Bill & Katie to sit in the royal box. Hmph.

Easy wins for Federer and Djokovic before I even woke up, so that’s the semifinal everybody’s been talking about. The other matches are really tight. Ferrer and Murray split the first two sets in tiebreaks - Ferrer served for both sets and could be up 2-0, but there is no quit in Murray. Tsonga won the first set against Kohlschreiber in a tiebreaker and lost the second, but he won the third set in yet another tiebreak. Tense stuff!

Go Ferrer and go Djokovic!

Murray’s serving was awesome in that final set, he was winning most of his service games to love and really making Ferrer work to hold serve, so justice was done in the end I think. Hopefully the rather long (especially for a 4-setter) match will not take too much out of his legs and he will beat Fed.

ETA: Oops, I meant after beating Tsonga of course!

Serena versus Radwanska… in the finals… If Serena pulls it out… coming back from the lung illness… will this put her as the dominate player of her era… possibly be considered the Post Graf era… 14 majors and 25 total major wins and her fifth Wimbledon…

By the way, Serena and Venus won two doubles matches yesterday and they have another match today.

She’s already the dominant player of her era. Who else would it be? She’s won 13 majors in singles since 1999. Venus and Henin both have seven, Sharapova has 4, and I don’t think anybody else has even that many. She’s had other periods where she went away for a while because of injury or other things, but when she’s healthy she always seems to find her way back to the top. I still think of that 2007 Australian Open where had missed time with injuries, was unseeded, and just got better and better through the tournament and then obliterated Sharapova in the final. That said, yes, it would be very impressive if she wins this one after everything that happened to her healthwise in the last year-plus and that very surprising loss at the French Open a few weeks ago. She’s serving lights out, by the way. She broke the aces record again.

I know this has been done to death… and I’m not one of those people who ignores this great sport when an American isn’t at the helm… but damn… Serena is 30… and Venus is 32…

Mardy Fish has made a nice run… but in about two years… we’ll be at the pit for American’s will true threats to win. I’m not and never have bought John Isner… seems to me like a giant Roscoe Tanner…
Kobe bryant has been superceded by Lebron and Durant… Payton Manning and Tom Brady are looking over their shoulders at Cam Newton and Matt Ryan…Matthew Stafford…
Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols are looking at Mike Trout and Bryan Harper and Jason Heyward…
Damn… someone… please… Didn’t Mac have some sons with Tatum O’Neal… lol… Connors got a kid??? Anyone… please…

I’m kind of the opposite of Chicagojeff and not just because I live on the opposite side of the country.

I don’t want any Americans at the top 10 (unless it’s Roddick or Fish or Blake) just so I can sit back and listen to all the American announcers try their damnedest to pimp out all the up and comers who end up never amounting to the greatness the announcers apply to them.

Like John Isner or some of the young female Americans. Every grand slam is the one where they’re going to make a deep run just because they beat their first opponent, maybe even their first two, then get destroyed by a real pro.

Highly entertaining to me, but then again, I have been called a Communist before.

I think Sloane Stephens and Christina McHale both have the game to make it to the top.

As far as the men goes, not much going on there. However, keep in mind that nobody heard of Rafael Nadal until one day he showed up in his long knickers, and proceeded to beat the snot out of everyone in sight. So it’s possible that there’s a 15 to 16 year old American out there who’s on the edge of making it big – we just haven’t heard of him yet because nobody ever pays attention to the juniors. Well, except for the commentators.

Yeah that’s been said about Stephens and McHale already and then they lose handily to a much higher ranked player.

I’ve seen McHale a couple of times and I don’t share your confidence. She has solid groundstrokes but I don’t see much else happening there. I don’t see her beating the Kvitovas and Azarenkas unless she develops her game further. I don’t know as much about Stephens.

Nadal rose to the top in a big hurry, but it’s not like nobody noticed him. He won his first ATP match at 16, scored some big wins, was seen as a favorite at the French Open when he was 18 (he missed the tournament with an injury) and won it at 19.

Federer is up two sets to one on Djokovic and got a break to start the fourth set, leading 3-0. Federer looks comfortable and I am not sure Djokovic has an answer. He needs to find one in a big hurry.

Dude, Federer is killing Djoker. I’ve not seen Djoker beaten like this in a long time.

Djokovic lost his focus after his Grandpa died. He’s still playing more consistently than he did two years ago, but he’s not playing with the same fearlessness that he played with during his dream year.

Hoping for a Murray/Federer final, though I can’t root against Jo-Wilfried. I actually think Tsonga has a better chance of beating Federer, but I have a soft spot for Murray.

And Federer is through to the final.

Fed Wins! IMO, confirmation of the best player ever. Federer will get the Number One ranking again with a win against Murray or Tsonga. He is already will be ranked ahead of Nadal.

Here here!! For the 30yr olds LOL…

Fed looked awesome out their… and an added plus is either Tsonga or Murray… Can’t wait!!!

He did it! Federer is back to the Wimbledon final! And now we return to Britain’s national heartburn. Interesting thing about this tournament- everybody was shocked Nadal lost, and the end result is that the #1, 3, 4, and 5-ranked guys made the semis instead of 1-2-3-4. It didn’t exactly open up the draw.

Just looking at the ATP rankings. I don’t think Murray passes Nadal even he wins on Sunday.

No, Murray would still be around 600 points behind Nadal if he won the tournament.
