Del Potro gets into trouble again but holds for 1-0 in the fourth. This match needs to go five, and hey, U.S. Open organizers, isn’t it cool that the winner won’t have to play again tomorrow and probably won’t be wiped out if this one goes long?
This has been a joy to watch.
Indeed. This has been worthy of a final.
The USTA still thinks fifth set tiebreaks are a good idea. (Well, maybe they are, in doubles, especially if the alternative is extending the tournament an extra day.)
Now that the US Open is moving to ESPN (in 2014?), maybe they’ll consider a Sunday night men’s final. I think ESPN can live with moving Sunday Night Baseball to ESPN2 for one night.
I don’t really have a problem with those.
That wouldn’t help, but they are actually going to get rid of the consecutive day thing in the next couple of years and get rid of the third day of first-round play in the process. I think for one year they’re moving the final to Monday because the last couple of years it’s been delayed by rain anyway. Everybody hated that move, so after that they’re just going to reorder the schedule so the semis are played on Friday and the final is on Sunday. This is just a reminder of why the consecutive-day thing is dumb.
And we’re going to a 5th!!!
And to get there Del Potro had to save two match points! This is the second Slam in a row where Djokovic has found himself in a semi that looks like an all-time classic.
This is just magic. Whoever loses it will be very unfortunate.
Oh are you kidding me? A minute ago Djokovic came to net to finish out a point and JMDP passed him with a backhand slice as he ran way off the court behind the baseline. Djokovic was shouting at himself in frustration. 3-3.
And Nole breaks!!!
And now serves for it!
Djokovic saves a break point and now has match point. …
And that’s it. I do feel bad for Del Potro but I hope that’s a springboard for him getting back to the top of the game, and since Djokovic lost such great match to Nadal at the French maybe it’s fair that he won this one. Murray vs. Janowicz up next.
Seems fitting that he wins it on a backhand down the line.
Great exchange at the net.
Fantastic match!!
A semi for the ages, couldn’t look away!
First set Janowicz. Who’d of thunk it?
But can he keep up this level against Murray?

I wonder if we can get another classic 5-setter.
I did kind of assume this would be an easy win for Murray, who is up a break early in the second. I’m not sure I can take another match as good as that last one. That was by far longest semifinal in Wimbledon history, by the way: 4:43. The old record was 4:01 by Becker and Murray’s coach. The Federer-Nadal final in 2008 was 4:48.
Murray is bothering Janowicz on serve far more than vice-versa but of course that’s no good unless you convert it.
Murray playing well though, break in the second and you’ve got to expect that if it goes for several hours Murray would take it.
Murray won five games in a row to take the third set, and now they’re stopping play so they can close the roof. Murray is really upset about this because he’s on a roll and doesn’t want to stop for 20-odd minutes while there’s still some light out.
match point…done!
Really good from Murray there. I called it a Murray-Djokovic final at the start and…lo…the world’s least risky prediction comes true.
Could be (yet another) classic.
Great day of tennis. I am so glad that it was a holiday yesterday and 95% of my co workers were on vacation. That allowed me to work from home and watch or hear most of both matches.
Bravo! Hope the ladies put on a good show tomorrow morning.
