Looks like Del Potro is going to be lucky to beat Hewitt! :smack:
Good for Hewitt. He’s pushed it to the 5th and is up the break.
Is Donald Young the most disappointing American male player ever?
Hewitt wins 6-1 in the final set.
That was one lacklustre effort from Del Potro!
But well done Leyton!
I feel like I’ve asked 1000 times, but do we have any idea when Hewitt will retire? Every year, I bet his next Australian Open is his last. However, if by a miracle, he won this tournament this year, he should quit and go out like Pete.
Yep
And John Isner…is out. Great.
Wosniacki (sp) also out. & her outfit is the ugliest I’ve seen so far. Looks like she took pieces from 4 old tennis dresses & sewed them together.
Giorgio(sp) is a cutie . Good job on her coming through qualies !
Symzeck(so) only US man left!
Today was my day at the Open. Maybe I’ll try to get back there another night this week, but I had a seat in Ashe and a pass to everyplace else on the grounds. I saw the beginning of the Bryans’ match- I stuck around longer than I planned because they lost in the first set and didn’t seem to get control of the match until the middle of the third set.
After that I watched the end of the Wawrinka-Baghdatis match on Armstrong. For a while there it looked like Baghdatis might push it to a fifth set, but he couldn’t quite do it. It was great to see him in person, though. He’s a true showman and the crowd loved him. With some time to kill I went to Court 17, which has either been expanded or is going to be expanded again, and saw Istomin go into the tank against Seppi. Istomin was crushing the ball but he seemed to just lose his way in set three. Ultimately he won it in five. He’s playing Andy Murray next, so he may live to regret his failure to end that match sooner.
And then came the main event: Serena vs. Sloane Stephans. Stephens came out playing well and the match was close to even until early in the second set, but Serena’s defense was fantastic and she was not going to be denied in this one. You could see how badly she wanted this one: she went down to one knee for a moment after the match ended, and you don’t often see that after a 6-4, 6-1 win in a quarterfinal. It was an extremely impressive performance.
I am so envious of Marley right now. Cool that you got to go. Be glad you didn’t go today.
Rain.
Yeah, I was nervous about the rain yesterday. We got the alternative: it was baking hot.
Federer out in straight sets.
That wasn’t much fun to watch. I think Federer wants to play more offense and come to net more, but he isn’t fully comfortable with it. He hesitated a lot, which meant he was in poor position or got passed. Keeping up with Djokovic and Nadal and Murray is not going to get any easier but I think he can do better than this, and I’d like to think he will.
Was there yesterday. I saw Nadal. He had dropped the first set, but afterwards has a stranglehold on the match. I left the Ranoic and Gasquet match for it. Big mistake.
The humidity is going to be factor, it was 11 pm when I left and my shirt was soaked. But on what I saw yesterday, Nadal is playing like it 2010. He is going to be difficult to beat.
Overall, I loved it. It’s a better and cheaper experience then Wimbledon.
it’s so painful to watch former Titans go down in flames. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for them to slug it out, believing that they have the stuff it takes, but frustrated by their inability to execute. I mean 2 out of 18 break chances? That’s depressing!
Kohlschreiber played out of his mind for the first set v. Nadal. Then Nadal changed his game ever so slightly and it was over. I was so glad to see him come into the net and playing more offensivelyl instead of relying on his mad defensive skills.
Didn’t get to watch the Sloane v. Serena match. I’m on vacation this week, so we have other stuff going on. I’d have liked to see Pennetta take out Halpen, as well. I love Pennetta and am really glad to see her go far. She doesn’t have a prayer against Williams or Azarenka, but good for her.
Love how the shorts are getting shorter. Hate how the women’s skirts are now micro skirts. Don’t care to see their hineys, thank you very much.
Hewitt in the 5th set against Youzhny.
Hewitt served for the match, loses in the fifth:( good for Youzhny!!
Novak’s match over in a flash. Missed pretty much the whole thing while having breakfast. Poor Granollers.
No coverage on NZ TV now, even though our sole representative (Erakovic) is on playing doubles - & it looks like they are competitive against the number 2 seeds.
