John Isner is having another John Isner-y match: he’s played three sets with Feliciano Lopez and all three have gone to tiebreaks. Isner won the first set and Lopez won the second and third. There have been no breaks of serve and only six break points total, and the match has lasted about two and a half hours so far. In other matches, the Eugenie Bouchard train ride continues: she’s into the fourth round. She’ll play Kerber or Sharapova next for a spot in her third straight major semifinal.
A break, finally- Lopez scored one in the 11th game of the fourth set and he served out the match. The two of them combined for 86 aces (52 for Isner) and 135 winners to 37 errors.
John John John…sigh…
No US Americans left …got the Canadians though:)
The Kerber/Shreikapova match was a slugfest! One of the best women’s matches I have ever seen.
Kerber wins!!
Nadal is in a little bit of trouble against Nick Kyrgios.
5-5 in 2nd set after losing first set 6-7.
Kyrgios is a big serving Aussie and Nadal has yet to figure out his serve. Ranked 144th in ATP.
Kyrgios won 36/36 of the points when he got his first serve in.
Nadal, who has lost the first set of all of his matches, just broke to took the second. Wherever this goes from here, Kyrgios is also announcing himself as a young player to watch- he just turned 19.
In other matches, Raonic got past Nishikori and Federer blew by Tommy Robredo. Federer has yet to drop serve, nevermind lose a set. He’ll play Stan Wawrinka next. On the women’s side, the only remaining major winner in the draw is Kvitova. Halep and Bouchard could both make breakthroughs here. Oh, and the Williamses had to retire in doubles. Serena had zero energy out there for some reason. She just looked horrible. In the third game she double faulted four times in a row.
Come on Rafa…the honour of Spanish sports is at stake!!!
I really like the pace of Kyrgios play. Little wasted time between points.
I could believe that. I saw that service game and it was really uncomfortable to watch. She was having trouble bouncing the ball and most of her serves landed far short of the net.
Kyrgios wins another tiebreak!
Kyrgios breaks serve and quickly consolidates for 4-1! Nadal hasn’t looked his best during this tournament, but this would be a stunner regardless.
Kyrgios Wins! I really liked the way he played. Sometimes a bit sloppy as he missed some real easy shots but he hit some incredible shots.
He has all the physical tools to be a world class player, but has to work on the mental focus.
Nadal could never figure out his serve.
Strangely, unless Djokovic wins this week, Nadal will have a bigger lead on Novak in the ATP rankings because Rafa was only defending a first round loss from last year. Novak is defending a 2nd place finish.
Rafa has a 170 point lead going into Wimbledon. If Novak doesn’t win, Rafa will have at least a 340 pt lead.
And he’s done it! Kyrgios upsets Nadal in four, winning two tiebreaks and losing serve only once. 37 aces, 70 winners to 31 errors. A huge hitting game. (Nadal was not bad; he had 11 aces and 44 winners to 18 errors.) The quarters look like this. I think we’ll remember this one as a breakthrough event for young stars on the ATP tour- Dimitrov, Raonic and Kyrgios are all in the last eight. (Cilic isn’t an old man either- he’s 25.) Kyrgios had never been past the second round in a major before, and this is the second quarterfinal of the year/career for Raonic and Dimitrov.
Novak Djokovic (SRB) [1] vs. Marin Cilic (CRO) [26]
Andy Murray (GBR) [3] vs. Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) [11]
Stan Wawrinka (SUI) [5] vs. Roger Federer (SUI) [4]
Milos Raonic (CAN) [8] vs. Nick Kyrgios (AUS)
If he held it together like this for four sets against Nadal, I think he’s got some focus.
Yup pretty exciting. First time Nadal has ever lost to someone born in the 90s, apparently.
Kvitova just won her 1st set easily
And it’s the first time in almost a decade that a teenager beat the #1 player in the world at a Slam event. The last time was Nadal over Federer in the 2005 French Open semifinals.
True, but he did miss some easy shots, and I don’t think One match makes a trend.
That’s a fair point. I’ll try it this way: it’s very impressive and I think this shows what he’s capable of. He had a great winner-error ratio, so he can’t have made a lot of mistakes over a three-hour match, he only got broken once, and he didn’t fade in the big moments. There will be bumps along the road, but wow.
Another crazy stat, this one from SI: Kyrgios is the first player ranked outside the top 100 to beat the #1 player at a major since Andrei Olhovskiy upset Jim Courier in the third round of Wimbledon in 1992. Kyrgios was ranked 144 in the world going into the tournament, got in via wildcard, and he’s the youngest player in the entire men’s draw. If Nadal had thumped him in straight sets you’d still have said “fourth round in his first Wimbledon as a pro- that’s a big deal for this guy.”
I can’t find the article at the moment but Kyrgios was quoted as saying he believed he could beat Nadal.
& the match (or the part I saw of it) was played quickly.
I’m hoping they are starting to penalise time wasters.
It’s looking bad for Murray. Dimitrov won the first two sets and just broke Murray’s serve in the third. Djokovic and Cilic split the first two sets and are 3-all in the third.
