Tennis 2023 Discussion

American Rajeev Ram just won his third consecutive US Open in doubles, partnered with British player Joe Salisbury.

I was at the Open for the quarterfinals on Tuesday and saw Coco beat Ostapenko very convincingly. Happy to see her win today!

I’m watching the Mixed Doubles final and they just pointed out that for the first time:

All four #1 positions are changing after a Grand Slam.

Men’s number 1 will now be Novak no matter what happens today.

Women’s will be Sabalenka even though she lost the final.

Doubles for Men will be changin.

Doubles for Women will be changing, including I think Coco Gauff being #1 in doubles.

I’m not sure I followed all that as I don’t get how doubles rankings work, but apparently everything is having changes at the top.

Tennis.com has a prediction that Medvedev will win today due to him playing so well and Novak playing not up to his championship standard.

Novak wins the first set.

Over 400 matches just in Grand Slam tournaments, and Novak has only lost 9 times when he has the first set won. 4, however, were in finals.

This makes sense since he is playing the top player at that point, more or less.

I think Medvedev can still win.

I’m starting to take this back. Medvedev is playing horribly, to be honest. He looks, at this point, like he does not have enough in him to win this. He’s tired, possibly?

I can’t believe it, but now Novak looks bad. He looks exhausted out there. He once laid down breathing hard and now has leaned on his racket after a point looking genuinely tired.

An almost two hour second set.

Novak wins the tiebreak and is up 2-0 now. Medvedev will need a miracle. I kind of hope it goes 3 more hours.

Novak Djokovic ties Margaret Court with 24 Grand Slams.

He’ll win six more to make it 30? I think he might.

"Awkward Branding as Djoker gets the “Moderna Shot of the Day”

Simona Halep banned for four years after it has been found she was doping.

If you are a tennis fan, John McEnroe has a new TV show called McEnroe’s Places and he goes over some of the history of tennis, but also does entire episodes dedicated to individuals. One covers his match vs. Borg, who appears with him. One episode is dedicated to Maria Sharapova and is a lot of fun.

Highly recommended if you like McEnroe or tennis in general. I do like John McEnroe, especially older, calmer John.

It’s on ESPN+.

Heh will it have as much pizz-azz! as his MSNBC McEnroe show from way back?

Oh, he mentions it and I think it was CNBC. He’s pretty self-deprecating on this show.
