Never saw match and curious what that’s about.
I’m not a Djokovic fan, but this shouldn’t happen to anyone:
“A concerned Novak Djokovic says he will undergo extra medical tests in relation to being struck by a water bottle after crashing out in the third round of the Italian Open.
The Serb had been signing autographs on Friday after his second-round win over Corentin Moutet when a metal bottle fell out of a fan’s backpack and directly on his head.”
‘Nausea, dizziness, blood’: Djokovic will undergo tests for bottle injury after loss | Novak Djokovic | The Guardian
Ah thanks.
It must have been worse than it looked. It was difficult to determine how high that fall is and how hard it hit him.
I think he’ll be fine. Thankful it was just an accident, nothing intentional.
Imagine being the owner of the bottle - potentially being responsible for bringing the career of the greatest ever (as this Federer fan has begrudgingly admitted for a while now) to a slightly premature end. I’m not a fan of No-vax but I hope that’s not the case.
Nadal loses in straight sets in the FIRST round of the French Open.
Oh, boy. I think he’s going to have to retire.
He drew a very hot opponent, but yes, the trajectory of his performance on clay is not promising.
I hope he keeps going, but properly for selfish reasons. I really love the big 3 and hate to see any of them go. I admit, I was even teary-eyed during Roger’s final match and the ceremony after.
Edit: I hope Nadal does a proper final match and Roger attends.
Novak WDed from French Open. Played a couple long matches and complained about the courts not getting groomed properly or often enough.
Jannik Sinner will become the new #1 player on Monday, even if he loses his next match.
Coco into the quarter’s.
Judging from the legends who were forced to retire and who are approaching retirement, 37 seems to be the median age when the body finally can’t do it anymore. Serena Williams, Roger Federer, now Nadal, and maybe now Djokovic were/are all at that critical age. Nadal is surely done, and knee problems for Djokovic at 37 may very well mean that he’ll never get that 25th major title.
Gosh.
Guessing no. 1 will be musical chairs over the next while.
Sinner will have a pretty big lead over Alcaraz even if he loses his next match (9525) and Carlos wins (7880) Novak is at 8360 pts.
Not sure how serious Novak’s injury is, I am guessing his next tournament is Wimbledon at the earliest.
I think Sinner has a great chance to stay at Number 1 until the end of year.
ATP Live rankings here, but it’s not updated for Novak’s WD.
Carlos Alcaraz was ‘rock’ solid, beating Sasha Zverev in 5 sets in a very entertaining match. Carlos beat Jannik Sinner in the semis, also in 5 sets.
Iga Swaitek won her 3rd straight French Open and has big lead in the WTA rankings over #2 Coco Gauff.
There seemed to be a lot of injury and illness in this event.
I just looked at the Wimbledon site and found their full draw page easier to navigate than the US Open page: The Ladies’ Singles Draw - The Championships, Wimbledon - Official Site by IBM
For some matches it also gives “Likelihood to win”, for example Iga Swiatek is 93% likely to beat Petra Martic.
Wimbledon - during the tournament, do the groundskeepers do any maintenance on the players’ serving areas? They are getting rather worn down and brown only a few days into the event.
From what I recall - no further maintenance other than mowing is done on the courts during the tournament now. Yeah, usually by the end of week one, the service areas get like that, hence there used to be a ‘rest’ on ‘Middle Sunday’ for maintenance, which was dropped two years ago because court officals felt that the current seeding technology had improved enough to allow continuous play for the two weeks.
ETA: Heh, judging by how the service areas are already looking, I might not be too convinced of the officials’ assessment.
Up and coming American Emma Navarro took it to Coco Gauff in straight sets in second round action. Emma was on fire for most of the match; CG failed to capitalize on key points especially early on. Got a little snipey about her box in the presser, afterwards. Please don’t read that metaphorically.
Watched the Taylor Fritz / Lorenzo Musetti in a see-saw five setter, mainly to watch a one-handed backhander play. There’s only three remaining in the top 50. One of the (several) things I miss about Federer.
Interesting men’s semi to see with Medvedev against Alvarez.
