Draws were just posted yesterday, I believe:

On the men’s side - Federer has said he wants 20 Grand Slam titles before he retires. The US Open is his 2nd best Slam event with 5 titles under his belt. Will this make 6 (for a total of 17).
Or will Nadal finally make his career slam? He’s reduced the amount of hard court tournaments he’s competed in coming into the US Open - his knees are better, he’s more rested, he’s experienced, and he’s motivated.
Or will there be another “upset” this year?
On the women’s side - with S. Williams out, Wozniacki is a number one seed for the first time at a slam event. She reached the finals last year - can she do it again this year?
I can’t be the only one excited about tennis? I remember the Wimbledon thread
http://www.usopen.org/en_US/index.html
US Open start Monday!
I can’t find a list of seeds in a nice organized list. Maybe someone can and post them in this thread.
Can Rafael win his first US Open? And put a headlock on the #1 ranking?
Fed is seeded #2, Novak #3, Murray #4.
Serena is out with an injury. and IMO, she should not have been allowed to play in this tournament anyways after her behavior last year. .
Because Serena is gone, Caroline Wozniacki is the #1 seed for gals. Yep Caroline Wonzniacki. her best 2010 finish in a major is a quarterfinalist. She did lose to clijsters last year in the Us Open finals.
Kim Clijsters is 2nd seed. Venus #3. And Jankovic #4.
I think I saw on the ESPN crawl that she won the run-up tournament last week. Not a major, of course, but it would seem that at least she’s on her game.
How current do you want? I did a fast and dirty Google and pulled up the top 100 as of 23 Aug.
Google ~ ATP Tennis Rankings. It was about the third get down.
Federer is a strong favorite. He did win Australia this year and Cincinnati.
Oh, and no Juan Martin del Potro, who really could have repeated I think.
Mod’s note:
Two threads merged. Since the OP on the other thread had posted first, it appears as the OP on this one (which had more posts).
Thread US Open 2010 -> Thread US Open (Tennis) Discussion.

Oops i didn’t see the other thread. Sorry about that, Thanks Gukumatz.
I love my tennis - but work, my mother’s health problems & time differences mean I won’t see much of it.
The women’s should be interesting with so many top womaen injured.
I’m going to go with Azarenka. I’d love to see her really break through
Nadal for the men. He seems really relaxed.
Women’s doubles Huber/Petrova.
I haven’t checked the mens doubles but I’ll take the Bryan Brothers.
Easy day for Andy, which is good.
Not so easy for Soderling, though.
I spent all day and night at the Open yesterday and had a blast. I saw the night session, about half of Soderling’s match - I was in the front row on the Grandstand for a lot of it - and pieces of a bunch of others.
I thought Federer looked the best I’ve seen him in a long while. It helps that it was a night match against an opponent who’s never been in the main draw before, but I thought he was very sharp for the most part. He didn’t do that well on the break points and he missed a few easy volleys, but I thought he was very good. And of course this shot was just crazy. My friend and I were discussing how it compares to the one he hit against Djokovic last year. This one was a few steps further behind the baseline, but Dabul stayed back instead of coming to net.
Soderling had a lot of trouble with his serve and with Haider-Maurer’s serve. This guy was serving bombs - he got into the 130s frequently and I think he had about 25 aces. Unless you’re near the court and you can feel these things hit the wall you lose sight of just how hard they hit. Soderling pulled through and I was happy to see him in person and view that big forehand up close, but it wasn’t a very good performance. He needs to get better immediately because he’s going to have to deal with Dent’s serving and volleying next. One positive was his Swedish cheering section, around eight guys in yellow shirts who chanted and sang and such. I was very entertained.
I saw a bit of Thiemo De Bakker’s match against Marc Giquel and I was impressed with De Bakker for sure. I see why people are talking about this guy as one of the next big things. I watched about a set of Cilic’s match. He was down 5-2 in the first set, but came back to win that one 7-5 and then steamrolled the guy. Cilic is really something to see. He’s like an octopus with those long arms, and he’s very skinny. The guide lists him as 6’6" and 180 pounds.
On the way to the Soderling match I looked in on Hantuchova and Safina for a few games. It took me a few minutes to realize it was Safina, and that she’s unseeded here this year because she’s missed so much time. She was the #1 seed last year (for all the good that did her). Hantuchova got her in straight sets.
I also saw Robert Kendrick take the first set of Gael Monfils, but Monfils came back to win in five. I took in Stosur’s match for a few minutes but I needed to get out of the heat after about a set. She got off to a really rough start and I’d like to see her on a better day.
As for the draws… I didn’t think any of the top seeded guys got a very tough draw in the first few rounds. Djokovic’s quarter is probably the toughest. He could get Fish in round three and he’s been playing great. In the quarters he could get Roddick or Davydenko. Federer could get Cilic in the quarters, or Soderling. He was on track to get Hewitt in the third round, but Hewitt’s out. A replay of Nadal’s Australian Open match with Verdasco could make a great quarterfinal.
It’s hard to judge Federer based on him playing a qualifier. I did watch a few matches of his at the ATP in Cincinnati and he was good, but not as sharp as I’m used to seeing from him. He just isn’t the same player he was a few years ago, and I wonder if he’s 100% healthy. He looks awfully thin. Oh, and hate, hate, hated his pink girly shirt.
BTW, a friend of mine had dinner with Federer when he was in town and said he is a very nice guy. His wife wasn’t with him. I told her husband that next year he was to take me as his substitute wife and he said he’d see.
I also saw Nadal in Cincinnati and was really surprised that for as good as he was in the first set, he made so many errors after that. I’m not sure if he was rattled by the crowd support for Baghdatis, which was about 60/40 Nadal/Baghdatis IMO. I also got to sit in the front row for that match, and got to watch Nadal pick his seat up close and personal. His bright pink shirt, in contradiction to Federer, really showed off his awesome physique. My friend, who was sitting next to me, would occasionally make a completely unrehearsed kind of squeak whenever he walked by. She’s 50.
Sooo, long story short, given how they played in Cincinnati, I’m going to predict that the winner of the US Open will be…neither Nadal nor Federer. Oh, and bummer that DelPotro isn’t here to defend his title.
As far as the women go, I’m going to have to go with Kim Clijsters again. Sharapova has the game but not the head. Pennetta looks really strong, too. Oudin might make a run but it’ll be a miracle if she gets past so many taller, more established players now that she’s no longer the Whiz Kid flying under the radar.
I wish I could have seen how Federer looked in that tournament, but I do think that even if he’s not going to get to 2006 levels again, he did look better.
Baghdatis lost today, which is too bad. He’s got his ranking up to 16 but Arnaud Clement got him. Fish almost got upset, which really surprised me. I think his opponent got worn down by the heat or by cramps. Fish won the last two sets 6-0 and 6-1. Jankovic and Kutznetsova both could have lost and Djokovic was down two sets to one and a break, but he came back to win, too.
Federer is looking great. Check out his between the legs shot.
Nice.
Azarenka just collasped 7 games into the match. It looks really scary. I hope she is OK.
Wow, I hadn’t heard that. It’s really hot out there!
Berdych lost.
That has to be disappointing.
Yeah, that’s a very surprising loss. For whatever reason Berdych has never done well in New York but I thought he’d improve on that this time. Ljubicic also went down, and so did a few seeded women, including Bartoli and Azarenka. Oudin also lost. Venus might be relieved to see she doesn’t have to play Pironkova in the next round.
I haven’t seen an update on Azarenka lately but it sounded like the tournament organizers were suggesting her faint had more to do with a fall she suffered during practice during the morning than it had to do with the heat. I’m not sure I buy it since she’s struggled with hot conditions before, but we will see. Regardless I hope she’s okay.
They’re now saying Azarenka suffered a mild concussion after falling while she was running a sprint during practice, and that’s what caused her lethargic performance during the match and then the faint. I hope the effects don’t last. Meanwhile Roddick is playing a rather flat match against Tipsarevic.
