And I’m finding that the ones that made the unicode character tables do deserve to be sent to a new circle of hell.
I mean, who made the black and white boxes to have different sizes and spacing? Same goes for the rectangles, Trying with closest more black box like symbol:
.a b c d e .f. g h
♜♞♝♛♚♝♞♜|8

On edit: And while it shows properly in Firefox, the black “tiles” do not show at all in android. Bummer.
Trying the few “black” “squares” of the same size and spacing that I could find:
.a b c d e .f. g h
♜♞♝♛♚♝♞♜|8

Both of these look correct on my iPhone/Safari.
The last example looks good in regular browsers on desktops, but in android with Opera the boxes appear with an extra rectangular box that throws the spacing off. But as noted many other mobile browsers do not have that problem, I guess that solution will have to do as the most manageable and “natural” mini chess board to explain positions in an informal way in this and other message boards. I will check if other Android browsers deal better with it.
Thank you all for your input so far.
Post 76 looks good on my Samsung Note 3. Except the numbers should be on right.
None of the letters in post 79 work.
A simple chess board with the proper color squares:

I’m running tapatalk, by the way.
The “white box” symbol is difficult to easily distinguish from the piece symbols. The color palate is too similar.
Peter Morris’ first looks almost perfect, except that the H is off by about one space.
cmyk’s looks perfect. IE 9.0somethng.

The three listed here by BigT also look great to me, Win7, Chrome.
