Sometimes we need an excuse like that to Deep Clean[sup]TM[/sup] our apartments.
I did the same thing once - ended up having to fly from Dublin to London and do the same-day passport thing so I could attend the Hong Kong handover the next day. Expensive nightmare.
Two years later I was moving house and found the old one in a hardback copy of Keep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell. I had been using it as a bookmark, and it showed that I had never got beyond page 22.

Speaking from experience, only panic can come from even for an instant using your paycheck as a bookmark in a library book.
(I managed to get the check back. And only once the crisis had been averted did the librarian laugh at me.)
