Testing a dog for diabetes

Basically what I want to know is, are the urine glucose-testing strips designed for humans accurate with regard to doggy pee?
mmm

I fostered a blind, diabetic dog for ten months, and the human urine test strips work, but aren’t as accurate as the blood testing (which can be done at home.)

This dog’s regimen and insulin dose had been worked out before I took him in, so the pee strips were sufficient, the vet told me. I did it every 2-3 days to ensure he was staing in acceptable renges. They’re not accurate enough to allow for adjusting and determining dose though.

I would definately ask the vet, it seems logical that you could use strips designed for humans as long as you can translate / convert the readings. Sounds like you’re monitering only urine and not blood. I do blood monitoring so I got an ‘Alpha Track’ kit from my vet that is designed for animals. It included moniter, test strips, lancets and monitering solution. You set the monitor for dog or cat - I don’t know what’s special about the test strips other than that they ‘are designed for testing on animals’ and specify different ranges for dogs vs. cats. You can re-order supplies (they have a shelf life) directly from Alpha Track.
