I’m sure he is. That and it’s a bitch of a hand to play.
I came across this man versus machine poker game, but I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet.
I played a couple of hands - it was much more realistic in that there were only a few “players” who didn’t fold preflop.
Also, it appears to be an “open source” project, so it has that going for it.
The problem with Jacks is knowing where you are. Even if they’re better than your opponents’ average starting hand, it’s hard to know when you’re ahead. Sure, if you flop another Jack, you’re golden, but what happens when the flop is, say Q-9-7? You’re ahead of any lower pocket pair, any A-nonQ, suited connectors or random junk, but way behind Aces, Kings, Queens, A-Q, and K-Q. And your opponent will probably play K-Q and 9-8 suited the same way preflop, so you have no clues as to whether you’re ahead or behind.
As opposed to when you have the 9-8 suited, where you almost always know exactly where you are (usually behind, sure, but you’re not going to lose a lot of money thinking you’re ahead when you’re not).
Do you guys only play on Thursdays, or every night? Are you playing with real money? Is there an in-game chat feature or do you have to have AIM?
I might want some of this action, depending on the responses.
just on thursdays. i mean getting enough once a week was tough there for a while. when if first started we had around 5 or 6. last week, i think we had fourteen. i am certain that if more interest developed we could probably expand it. there is some way that you set up your computer to host it and from what i can tell anyone can do that given the proper level of technical proficency.
i think some of the [del]losers[/del] folks who go out early go and play ring for a while afterwards while the rest of us bash each other around.
it’s all funsies except for bragging rights which is better than cash in my book with these folks. if you win you have the option of writing the color commentary for the results posting.
there is in game chat but we use aim primarily. but that is just [del]heckling and derision[/del] encouragement, links to some nsfw content as well and commentary about the questionable ancestry of certain folks and the way they are playing
join us and try it out. i think most of the folks that have recently shown up keep coming back so something must be working. plus even if you hate it you will have only lost an hour or so of your life. Have we ever (recent history) made it to the second break? i know we were close last week but that’s as deep as i have ever gone. shoot some weeks i think we were done before the first break.
just anecdotally. the other night i am playing at the local watering hole’s nightly freebie game (50.00 for the winner plus a ticket to a 180 person tournament where the winner wins a wsop entry). six left and i am in second. sitting big blind. pocket jacks. all in with around 12k. player to left (big stack) who had just called goes ahead and calls my all in.
shows a q.
flop - nada, nada, nada,
turn - nada
river - a
youbetcha. jacks suck almost as bad as the bbbbbbbbyyyyyyytttttttccccccchhhhhheeeesss.
and it looks to be nice weather in san antonio tonight so you folks could be in for another long night.
I’m still waiting on more details from my job, but for tonight at least, Im in.
And boy, do I need something to do other than work.
I just went to the Pokermavens website to try to go and create an account ahead of time. I don’t see a way to do that. Do I need to wait to join the SDMB private server (which isn’t up yet) to set up my account?
do you get to this point.
Yeah the private server isn’t turned on right now. We’ll have to wait for fbbl to turn it on, then it will be listed and that’s where you sign up for an account.
Yes. The list at pokermavens just prompts for a password and directs you to the server that runs the game. fubbleskag (happy now?) has been running ours for the last few weeks. Don’t know why it’s down now, but it’s always been up and running with plenty of time to register and play.
tg somebody who knows what they are talking about shows up.
there for a while i thought fois gras and i would be relegated to watching dirty videoes together.
and that always pisses the missus off.
Is there a balcony for those who want to watch the play first?
yes, sign in to the game but don’t register for the tourney. you can see the level of shit that i put up with weekly.
then just post your aim name and you can get invited. i think that way you can watch both tables and watch the donkeys and suck outs in dual screen.
but i continue to add. this is kind of a fun game. you can’t lose a penny. and if you at all like playing hold 'em it’s a great place to start getting your feet wet. i mean seriously dag will make sure you don’t come in last.
meeko will make you look like a genius until you run across one of his killers. and yeti, missy and the player who will not be named because his name of oslo is a curse on the universe itself will steal you blind, even when you are looking.
so it’s kind of honking fun.
the only one that is kind of all right is seguin. and that’s just he contributes to my chip stack on a regular basis.
the shit begins.
btw. throw chips at moving vehicles. they bounce back and it pisses missy off.
neta: or sign up and then just blind out. that way i have a chance of picking up some cheapies. root was notorious for this for a while. i think it was a new girlfriend. it seemed like he would get distracted after just a bit. or was that fubs?
I think I might try it this evening.
woot woot the fucking woot.
get ready to rid yourself of your[SIZE=“4”] loincloth and die a spartan death.[/SIZE]
Wow, that is a visual my dog doesn’t even like.
