Texas Rangers - what do they do exactly?

I’ve heard references to Texas rangers, but I’m not quite sure what their duties include. Is there a parallel in other states, say like State Troopers? Or are they more like an investigation agency (like the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation)?

They’re a state equivalent to the FBI, same as Tennessee’s BI, or Oklahoma’s, where I work. Our agency shares some agents who specialize in catching cattle agents with them, and they do a calf fry at the annual OSBI conference. So you could say the Rangers eat balls, too.
