Now that she’s been identified…well that’s weird. I can’t find a follow up article on HuffPo. Now why in the world would that be?
The awards must be a backlash against PC culture.
“Teacher of the year”.
That means she (1) Knows more about being a teacher than you ever will, (2) Probably judged her class better than you can, and (3) Has more to offer than you do or most other teachers do, even on her bad days.
Humour is a social phenomena. If you don’t think her jokes are funny, that says something about your social relationship. It says nothing about the content of the joke.
That’s a very weak appeal to authority.
It also ignores the fact that jokes can have a range of intents and consequences.
As for the social relevance of jokes, that’s a tautology. Of course. That’s the whole point.
Is this really a big deal, when you think back to the happy, carefree days of high school?
Some teachers also find it ok to have sex and bear children with their students. Is that ok, too?
To be honest, my worst memories of bullying in school were caused by my 5th grade teacher. There is an expectation of “being an adult” and such that can be really traumatizing for children.
Is this a BURN THE WITCH moment? Nah. It’s a “slap somebody upside the head so they don’t do dumb shit like this” moment.
Specifically “Anthony Aguirre Junior High Teacher of the Year and Channelview ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year 2012-2013”. Perhaps her ability has been going downhill for the past four years.
The rumor in my high school was that the yearbook had done that sort of thing until a parent saw it and sued the school. As a result, nothing even remotely like that was ever to be allowed again (these events supposedly took place in the 70s - so, no it isn’t a case of “millennials are too sensitive.” The parent who was angry would have been a member of the Greatest Generation).
There’s a way to give out “funny” awards. But the awards have to be funny, not mean, and you have to have the correct teacher/student relationship and the correct classroom dynamic. This teacher failed across the board.
