Thailand current events / Late 2016

I live here so I’m not going to make any comment at all. Check SCMP (South China Morning Post) for situation, they are Hong Kong based but likely to give a fair appraisal.

Others please feel free to comment on ongoing situation as it develops in the next weeks / month.

The king is dead, long live the… king? Is there an heir?

posted without comment: Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej dead at 88 - BBC News

Edit: it’s a very sad time for all Thai people, he was genuinely loved and a force that kept the country together.
[mods feel free to change title now this is confirmed]

Yes. Cown Prince Vajiralongkorn (regnal name presumably Rama X), 64.

My Thai wife just told me a few minutes ago. We have his picture in the living room and medallion hanging in the car. Every one of her friends has always spoken of him in the utmost respect. The Thai people’s relationship to their monarch seems unique in the world today.

I watched the news this evening and saw no mention on the three major US networks. Seems strange that the passing of such a person would not be spoken of.

Should be merged with this thread:

Thats US media for you. It was top headline on many international news sites, BBC, SMH etc

I saw it covered on PBS, and I also saw it on one of the major networks (ABC, I think).
