Ya weren’t doing that during the Clinton presidency?
No, you probably weren’t…SPOOFE, you know I love you (carnally)…but what’s the deal with implying that folks who are concerned about acid rain are morons?
Awwwwwww…some pathetic dot.com companies went under due to THEY WEREN’T FREAKING MAKING MONEY. My hearts bleeds for them. The rest of the economy is doing quite nicely, thank you…
You know, I’d have to say that with a few troll exceptions, and smattering of folks hanging out in MPSIMS, the Dope is remarkably free of morons, or anything resembling morons. From one side of the political spectrum to the other, I think this is generally the most articulate, intelligent, and well-informed public message board I’ve come across in 14 years of public message boards.
Of course, no matter how much someone disagrees with me, and how wrong I might find their arguments, I do not jump to the conclusion that they are morons. But that’s just me.
How come you don’t want to conserve? How come you don’t want to conserve clean water? How come you don’t want to conserve fuel? How come you don’t want to conserve wilderness? How come you don’t want to conserve clean air? Why don’t you change your name to “wasters” since it seems you’d rather waste those things as long as you can turn a profit doing it?
I thought this was funny and I voted for Nader.
BTW: When people talk about cutting down the last tree or seeing NYC underwater or using the last of the oil, we don’t necessarily mean we’ll see it happen in our lifetimes. But unlike some people I could name, we think we have a responsibility to future generations, to leave them a world they can live in.
Frankly, I think most conservatives don’t give a fuck what happens after they’re dead. I blame the Bible’s influence on the culture. (Of course, I blame MOST things on the Bible’s influence on the culture. ) What I mean by that is that the Bible tells us that we have dominion over the Earth; conservatives seem to think that means they can fuck it up all they want, and God won’t punish them for it. The Bible also tells people that we are here just temporarily and that our permanent home is either Heaven or Hell. “What difference does it make if the ocean is twenty feet higher in the future? We’ll all be in Heaven then! It won’t be our problem! It’ll be the problem of complete strangers! Let THEM worry about it. Besides, people NEED problems to solve; it builds character.” (I’ve actually heard people say this.)
Of course, atheist conservatives (there must be a few of you, right?) can rationalize it by saying, “The world ends when I die. Why should I care if the world’s a figurative hellhole 200 years from now? It won’t affect me.”
The conservatives’ credo must, therefore, be selfishness. Me first. (Or America first.) Gotta get mine before someone else does. If you’re poor, it’s your fault. Fuck the 3rd World; if they were smart, they’d be Americans. If we’re really running out of oil, we’d better use it while we got it; God gave us oil to be used. Open land was made to build on; who cares about some damn bugs or birds or turtles? The nation’s economy is at stake, goddammit!
Oh jab, how can you possibly think such a dastardly thing! Conservative/Republican ideology and policy is all about helping people! The fewer barriers there are to getting rich, the better it is for all of us! Don’t be silly!
(And don’t keep saying this kinda stuff out loud or you might find yourself permanently branded. Take it from one who knows…)
I have to say that the last election has given us a unique combination of bull and china shop. Bush Jr. is in the most precarious position of any President for a long time, and yet he’s constantly acting in such a hamfisted fashion. Whatever your take on greenhouse gases is, the fact is that his EPA chief was gung-ho for Kyoto until Bush Jr. left her hanging in the wind, and, moreover, he made a big campaign promise and immediately broke it, leaving himself open to comparisons to his father’s “Read my lips” pledge. Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, there’s something a little fishy about Bush searching for a loophole that will let him cut funding for overseas contraception by legislative fiat, immune to Congressional review.
If you ask me, I think the Republican party leadership must cringe every time Bush opens his mouth. Publically they have to support him 100%, but I can’t help but feel that they agree with me that they’re going to get voted out in 2 years, because Bush will be seen as being unwilling or unable to play well with others.
