Thank you to Yojimbo and the Dublin contingent!

In the following IMHO thread, I put out a request for good books on the 1916 Easter Rising, and the 20th century history of the IRA.

Yesterday I received in the mail a copy of Peter de Rosa’s REBELS: THE IRISH RISING OF 1916 that Yojimbo bought at the Trinity college bookshop, inscribed to me by himself, Coldfire, Spiny Norman, TwistofFate, ruadh, and Globetrotter! And spots on the endpapers where somebody spilled his Guinness that night!

I’ve read about fifty pages so far, and my personal ignorance is already diminishing…didja know that Erskine Childers, best known for his 1903 espionage novel THE RIDDLE OF THE SANDS, used his personal yacht for running rifles into the harbor at Howth?

Thanks, guys! Just wait till the next New York City SDMB party…

On behalf of Dublin, I’ll say “you are most welcome”. Even though, you forgot to mention me, didn’t I sign it? And if I didn’t sign that, what was that official looking document they placed in front of me?

Really, though all credit goes to Yoji, he’s the one who remembered & chose the book and paid for it. If you want to thank him, I’d suggest going to his house, cooking him an excellent meal, sleeping in his bed and then complain about his “manly” smelling soap the next morning. At least that’s what I did!

My goodness. I don’t even remember signing it!

You’re welcome all the same.

Ack…sorry, tater.

The autographs read:

Peter/yojimbo
Coldfire
/Jasper (maybe not Jasper. Goodness, his penmanship is atrocious)
S. Norman
ruadh
/wendy
John Larrigan/Twistofate
and…

Tracy.

Is that you? Everyone else put in a clue as to who they were, and yojimbo said Globe-trotter rather than tatertot in that other thread, so I thought…

Oh good. So I wasn’t that drunk after all.

Sure, Uke. I ask you for a book on the Bolshevik Revolution and all I get is a suggestion for something you haven’t even read. Feh. See if you get any more of that good Toledo Vernor’s Ginger Ale. I hope ya choke on yer lard, ya damn commie rat bastard.

Dat’s okay, Ike…heh, I’m suprized you could read my signature. At least I remembered my real name!

And Coldy’s real name is indeed Jasper, and for $5, I’ll tell you his whole name. hehehehehehe

Sacre bleu, Unc…five inside jokes in three lines of text? My hat is off to you!

Don’t be pickin’ on Coldsore’s given name. it also happens to belong my grandfather, Jasper Nimrod Seaney. Now, Coldy’s doesn’t seem quite so bad, does it?

Oh, your handwriting is perfectly legible, tater. One can tell that you are a woman of breeding and fine taste.

I can discern from the others that Twistoffate is the one with the best backgrounding in literature, as the Yeats quote is in his handwriting. And it’s equally clear from the swoops in the "e"s and the tails on the "g"s that Coldfire enjoys drinking beer and fast cars…that Spiny Norman is over six feet tall and was wearing a yellow shirt that night…that ruadh is a total babe…and that yojimbo has a fine touch on the piano but is a poor pinochle player.

Hey! That was the name of MY grandfather’s bootblack! Did your grandpa ever get as far east as Cleveland?

It’s like looking in a mirror

Glad it got to you ok Ike. Let me know if it’s any good.

Oh and Erskine Childers yacht The Asgard can be seen in Kilmainham Jail.

You misspelled the real reason: Guinness!

But okay, my handwriting IS pretty bad. I’d be more than happy to help you out though. Just scan it, and mail me the results!

Who are you trying to kid Globie… you were just as drunk as the rest of em.
