Do all philly people have it? Our biologist is from philly, and other than being a “wise guy” (not to mention a hilarious entertainer, the guy can do everyone from Elvis to Yoda), I haven’t noticed much of an accent at all. A lot of people, whether southern, or Hawaiian, or whatever tend to lose their accent when they move to the relatively accentless west coast, but not all so I guess I’m still pretty much in the dark when it comes to the accent you’re describing.
Some people don’t have it, some people lose theirs gradually as they live for a long time away from it, and some people deliberately rid themselves of dialectical accent.
I purposely rid myself of the Pittsburgh one. It took some concentration. Eve said she rid herself of the Philly accent.
Philadelphia is a big place. Mom and Dad were born and raised in different parts of Philly and have almost no accents (Though Dad has always said ‘add dee tude’ until this thread, I didn’t realize it was part of the Philly accent.). All four of my grandparents did though, some to the level of comic stereotype.
I haven’t heard much of the Philly accent in the fart northeast where I live. Recently, I was stunned when a group of neighborhood teenagers switched from chatting in Russian, to tawkin Philly.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a PhD deliberately lost the accent in order to be taken more seriously.
Cool, thanks for the info! Well the other thing could be, he’s been here for some time, it seems more often than not, people seem to lose accents here.
