From this morning’s New York Times update of the crash that was fed to local newspapers (before revelations about the co-pilot):
“When the plane plowed into craggy mountains northeast of Nice, France, it was traveling with enough speed that it was all but pulverized, killing the 144 passengers and crew of six.”
See. that was the problem. If they’d hit the brakes and slowed down before crashing, the plane wouldn’t have broken up at all. :dubious:
Eh? planes do crash without everyone on board dying and I imagine speed is at least one factor that determines whether a crash is survivable or not, or to what extent the plane remains intact.
As I recall, that’s an old bit of pilot gallows humor, saved for the bar after the wreckage is cleared and the bodies are recovered because every flight could be your last. Certainly not for public consumption. The moron probably heard it once, thought it was inside pilot information, and was showing off. Insensitive, poorly informed, and stupid make an ugly team.
